WHEN Abubakar Yati decided to marry his second wife, Halima, he never knew that he was bringing trouble not only to himself but also to his entire family.

Thirty-one years ago, Abubakar Yati married Kulua Abubakar and the marriage is blessed with seven children, all boys. The family which resided at Rubo/Madaka in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, like every other Fulani were engaged in cattle rearing.

The urge to have a female child, according to findings, forced Yati to marry Halima who had been married before, a marriage that was blessed with three children, one of them a girl. Soon after the marriage, Halima delivered, but also gave birth to a male child.

Unknown to Abubabar, Kulua the first wife, was not happy about the development in her matrimonial home and schemed how to eliminate her mate.

Crime and Security learnt that when Abubakar left on his cattle rearing business recently, Kulua executed the plan she had to make her the only woman in the house.

According to eyewitnesses, Kulua involved her two sons, Buba Abubakar 11 and Umar Abubakar 13 in the execution of the plan.

It was learnt that after getting one of the ropes they used to tie cattle, Kulua tricked her mate into the family compound where her two sons were already waiting.

Crime and Security gathered that Kulua and her sons then forced Halima to the ground and tied her like a goat while Kulua slaughtered her like a goat.

Kulua was reported to have also brought Yussuf, the boy the late Halima had for her first husband into the compound and with the assistance of her children tied him before slaughtering him too.

However, the only daughter of the deceased, Rakiya was lucky enough to escape from the clutches of Kulua and her children, but not before she received deep cuts at the back of the neck, which landed her at the Kagara General Hospital.

Kulua, after the ugly incident warned her children not to divulge what had happened to anyone or they would face similar treatment.

After committing the crime, Kulua and her two children then ran away to their relations in Nagara- Bulkutu in the Bukyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Reports have it that she told her relations that her husband approved of her journey and that they would stay for quite sometime.

However, neighbours who heard the unusual cry from Abubakar’s compound later found out what had happened and reported the incident to their Ardo, the Fulani head in the community who also informed the police of what had happened.

By the time the police arrived the scene, Abubakar had returned from his cattle rearing business and met the corpses of his wife and son.

‘I have never seen such a terrible thing in my life’ a shocked Abubakar told sympathisers who called at his residence to condole him.

He also regretted that his wife, Kulua involved his two young children in the dastardly act, but said he would want the law to take its course.

Kulua was later traced to Zamfara State by homicide detectives who arrested her and the children and brought them to the Kagara police station where they were detained.

The police were shocked when Kulua was to be brought out from the cell for interrogation when it was discovered that she had almost escaped from detention.

According to a reliable police source in Kagara, Kulua had since her arrival in the cell been using her fingers to dig a hole in the wall of the cell.

‘She had made a hole big enough for her to escape, but we were lucky that it was just at the time she was to dig a hole that we decided to bring her out for questioning, she would have escaped,’ the source said.

As a result, the police source said Kulua is now in hand and leg cuffs.

Kulua told Crime and Security that she decided to eliminate her mate because since she came into the family, things had not been good for her and her seven children.

She claimed that her husband abandoned her and the children, adding that even when the children were to be sent to rear cattle, her seven children were never involved.

Kulua also claimed that Abubakar was starving her sexually and that she made him realise that she had not been happy but he did not change his attitude.

Abubakar however, denied the allegations when contacted, saying that he knew he could take care of two wives equally according to Islamic injunctions which was why he decided to take a second wife.

The police confirmed the story and said that Kulua would be charged to court after investigations into the matter had been completed. The two underaged children had also been taken to remand home.
