I decided to put up this post to enlighten Nigerians so that they won't be deceived about the palliatives given to Canadian residence. You must meet up with certain criteria before you will be eligible. It's not being handed to everyone.
It's true there is a $2,000 monthly palliative for Canadian residence but below are the criteria to meet;
1. Residing in Canada and must be at least 15 years old.
a. You must not be a citizen or PR to qualify for the package.
2. Those who have stopped working because of reasons related to Covid 19 or are eligible for employment insurance regular or sickness benefits or have exhausted their employment insurance regular benefits or employment insurance fishing benefits between December 29 2019 and October 2020.
a. Must be laid off because of the crisis.
b. Employment insurance (EI): This is another employment benefit you qualify for when you loose your job not because you quit. You must have worked a total of 600 hours before you can qualify for EI. If you have lesser hours, you won't be qualify. Note that you pay for EI just like tax on ur paycheck.
3. Who had employment or self-employment income income of at least $5,000 in 2019 or in the 12 months prior to the date of their application.
a. Meaning those that came to Canada late last year till before boarders were shut won't qualify and till now they will stay without any income. All they would wish for is for the crisis to just end so they can start their life.
4. Who have not quit their voluntarily.
a. You won't be qualified if you were fired or resigned yourself because there's a report your office will submit directly to them.

You can add yours or correct what you feel is not too correct.
Thank you.

Lalasticlala please take this to front page so as to enlighten Nigerians for them not to be deceived again.

Please, number 3 is wrong. The $5000 could be earned outside Canada. If you arrived recently and have worked before the pandemic, you could still apply provided you earned up to 5k last year regardless of where.

Thank you for that input, I will have to confirm that. I have seen someone who did not meet these guidelines but have received once. He didn't apply the second time because he was told when he went to file for his tax that he will requested to payback when the time comes. Let it not be that will be the case of those that fall within that your category. For now they ain't really verifying because it will slow down payment but before the next tax filing, they would have completed the verification and those who didn't meet the guidelines will be required to pay back. Thanks for your contribution.

Well, they could be many other reasons why your friend was asked to pay back. I'm sure it's not cause his $5000 was earned outside Canada cause that bit is clear on thier site. People who have not met the criteria are receiving and would pay back later, I know. But receiving cash was never the basis of my submission. Like I said, it's on their site.

This can be interpreted in multiple ways eg do you have to be a resident while you earned the money eg a Canadian citizen earning money in the US or is it a case that I earned the money in Nigeria while I was not a resident, and I just moved to Canada this week and I qualify?

I don’t know the right answer, just raising to see if if it can be clarified.

Not really. That's where tense makes the difference. If they meant that you need to have been a resident when you were earning the $5000, that would mean their grammar is wrong. But they say you need to reside in Canada (present tense) and not that you need to have been residing in Canada. This only means you need to be in Canada as at the time you're applying for the CERB. Do you catch my drift?

You can call them to verify this.

I’m not applying but raised it to clarify for people who are Following the thread.

Advice to call is a good one or depending on financial situation just go for it and deal with the consequences later e.g. if you are running out of cash.
