Houses razed as Jos violence spreads News Jan 10, 2011 Jos — The violence caused by the alleged killing of eight people along the Jos-Mangu Halle highway in Plateau State continued in Angwan Doki area of Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area, yesterday, resulting in the burning of houses and general disorder. Security men had a difficult time restoring order as those whose houses were torched mobilised for reprisals leading to serious tension in Angwan Doki area of the council headquarters. It was learnt that the town was divided along ethno-religious lines as people gathered to launch attacks or counter-attacks one side against the other. The tension forced many people to remain indoors in the Jos metropolis while there was a general security alert in most parts for fear of outbreak of violence. Spokesman for the Special Task Force maintaining security in the state, Capt. Charles Ekeocha who confirmed the violence in Bukuru in a telephone interview said everything was being done to bring the situation under control. He told Vanguard that a number of houses were torched but could not confirm if there was any killing as the area was still tense. Igbo group warns Meanwhile, a Jos-based Igbo socio-cultural group, Izu Umunna Cultural Association, has warned that it will no longer fold its hands and watch the blood of innocent Igbo men and women being spilled on the streets of Jos in the recurring crisis. A statement jointly signed by the President, Prof Zebulon Okoye and Secretary General, Chief Elvis Chukwu, said Igbo had continued to be targets of attacks in the violence, saying, “enough is enough.” It expressed worry at what it called the consistent failures on the part of various security agencies to forestall and apprehend the perpetrators of these dastardly acts and the inability of government to bring culprits of previous violence and their sponsors to justice but said Igbo have refused to be cowed by the situation. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/01/houses-razed-as-jos-violence-spreads/ |

The officials better get this conflict under control. If Igbo groups based in Jos are sending warning, this is a worrying sign, because it is telling their brothers in the East what is happening to them. Do you think the wider Igbo will tolerate such nonsense? Just look at what happened in Onitsha and Aba in the past. People need to learn to get along. |

Akhenaten: A friend from back in jos just informed me today that a bus of filled of mostly igbo xtians were killed and muslims also attacked some of their shops. He said then the Igbos went out and started killing every Hausa they saw.and things are getting worse. |

I normally do not subscribe to an eye for an eye, but if this continues, my views may change. The Igbo are a majority group, I don't see why they should attack us. That is asking for trouble for their brothers in the East. I wonder who is committing the attacks. Is it both Hausa and Berom people? If so, this can be a three way conflict. |

Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by ekubear1: 2:27am On Jan 10, 2011 |
What I never understand about this is how 3rd parties get caught up. If Hausa and Berom are beefing, then why are Igbos and other southern groups getting killed too? |

Yoruba community cautions journalists on reports on violence Monday, 10 January 2011 00:00 From Isa Abdulsalami Isa, Jos News - National E-mail Print User Rating: / 0 PoorBest THE Yoruba Community in Plateau State has advised some state councils of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to stop unprofessional conducts and refrain from unguarded statements capable of causing disaffection or disunity among the masses, the media and the government. Apparently reacting to the recent call by the Sokoto chapter of NUJ following the recent bombings and crises in Jos, that a state of emergency be imposed on Plateau State, the community urged journalists and their unions to discard sentiments and always conduct in-depth investigations before rushing to the press so as not to ignite another round of violence in the state. A statement from the spokesman of the community and Head of Media and Planning for 19 Northern states, Mr. John Tunde Oladapo, issued on behalf of the Plateau State President of Yoruba Community, Chief Toye Ogunshuyi and the Oba of Yoruba in Jos, Chief Solomon Olugbodi, said journalists, as members of the fourth estate of the realm, are supposed to be impartial and should uphold the ethics of their noble profession devoid of any external influences or sectional interest. Meanwhile, the community has also called on the Federal Government to launch a manhunt for those behind recent bombings in parts of Plateau, Borno and Bayelsa states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) so that it does not escalate to other states in the federation. “If the perpetrators are not quickly fished out and their hideout detected, it is capable of derailing the general elections fixed for April this year. The community however commended the pro-active roles of President Goodluck Jonathan, the governors of Plateau, Borno, Bayelsa as well as Minister of FCT and all the security agencies in the country for responding quickly to checkmate the unfortunate incidents. The statement regrettably noted that some Yoruba living in Anguwan Rukuba and Gada Biu in Plateau State along with other ethnic groups lost their lives during the bombings but appealed to the bereaved families, especially Yoruba youths, not to retaliate or take law into their hands. It said while sympathising with the good people of the state irrespective of political, religious, ethnic and geographical differences, it frowned at the reckless statements and urged everyone to pray for the peace of the state and the nation in the forthcoming general elections. < Prev Next > http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=35022:yoruba-community-cautions-journalists-on-reports-on-violence-&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |

eku_bear: Good question. I think it has to do with religion rather than ethnicity. Since the igbos are predominately christians, they are usually a target for them. |
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by Olaedo1: 2:36am On Jan 10, 2011 |
eku_bear: As long as you are with the christian group, in a church, or in an area split between muslim and christian then you are a target. |

I really think islam has been hijacked! My father or the quran never preached violence except for the jihad ( the roman catholic church alo had they own during the crusades) |

Ola edo: Hrm, I see. Sounds like a pretty crappy situation. . . quite difficult to avoid getting caught in the middle. Hrm, if the Hausa there will treat Igbo no differently than Berom, perhaps they should align with the Berom to drive the Hausa out. Though I don't know enough about the situation on the ground to say what the best course of action for them is. |

It will be foolish to think Yorubas are not being attacked in the North. Especially in Jos. All Southerners are being targeted. I remember coming across an article that state that Yorubas were being targeted and they want protection. Jos crisis: Yoruba leader escapes death, house torched By Jude Owuamanam Sunday, 21 Feb 2010 in Plateau State, Chief Toye Ogunsuyi, escaped death with his family as his house was torched by unknown persons. The incident came barely a month after he escaped a similar fate while on a visit to displaced persons‘ camp at Rikkos when he and the Oba Yoruba of Jos, Chief Solomon Olugbodi were attacked by hoodlums. Ogunsuyi’s car was burnt while he received machete cuts on his body http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201002216273139 This crosses all ethnic grounds. |

Yeah, I'm sure of that. When outnumbered/outgunned, you've got to find some allies. Not sure this neutrality approach the Yoruba community there is going to be effective. . . |
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by jason123: 2:43am On Jan 10, 2011 |
Akhenaten: Yorubas know that. What annoys me is when they refer to yoruba muslims as fake muslim. WTF? |
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by jason123: 2:44am On Jan 10, 2011 |
eku_bear:Although, there is wisdom in neutrality. I do not know why yorubas are always playing the neutral party even if they are being killed |
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by asha80(m): 2:45am On Jan 10, 2011 |
this is what triggered the last violence i think
|
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by ekubear1: 2:47am On Jan 10, 2011 |
jason123: Who knows, maybe the current course of action is optimal. Like I said, I don't have enough info to know. But it is quite possible that throwing in behind one group or another will lead to a better outcome. |
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by Olaedo1: 2:48am On Jan 10, 2011 |
jason123: They insult people who practice the real islam. They want people to practice arab culture like they do,which they think is islam. because the yorubas dont follow them and go killing innocent people all of a sudden they are "fake muslims" |

Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by jason123: 2:52am On Jan 10, 2011 |
Ola edo:I actually think its the sharia law that differenciates them as ndu-chucks pointed out. Yorubas regard the law as brutality . |
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by Olaedo1: 2:55am On Jan 10, 2011 |
jason123: Sharia law is simply unislamic and is instead arabic practice. That's is why yoruba muslims dont practice it, which they are right in not doing. |

Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by udezue(m): 3:25am On Jan 10, 2011 |
If Igbos are getting killed then Igbos should be retaliating from Aba, Ph, Onitsha to Jos. Since we will always be a target then we might as well align with the Berom and wipe them out. |
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by Nobody: 6:00am On Jan 10, 2011 |
when the govt fails to bring culprits to book, and people are left without justice or any form of closure, this is what happens it is clear the government will do nothing. no one will be prosecuted, no one will be tried, no one will be hanged so the people of jos (berom, fulani, hausa, igbo muslim, xtian will look for their own justice |
Re: Houses Razed As Jos Violence Spreads by Afam4eva(m): 6:10am On Jan 10, 2011 |
This cannot be allowed to continue. The Igbos have taken this crap for a long time now. The Government should do something about this violence. I always ask myself what of it was Igbos that had this religious violence thereby killing hausas in the East they would have been anihilated a long time ago. |
