For More than 20 years, Sudanese government has appointed an ambassador to the United States of America, this statement was released by its foreign minister on monday.

Before the civilian rule in mid last year, President Omar al-Bashir government has not been on good terms with the United States. In April last year, his government was overthrown following series of mass protest from the populace asking for a civilian rule.

Sudanese foreign ministry said it has chosen Noureldin Sati, a veteran diplomat as its ambassador. State Department confirmed if the America will likewise appoint an ambassador to Sudan and calls this move a historic step towards better future.

In December, following a visit by Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok to Washington, DC, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the two countries would exchange ambassadors again after a 23-year absence.

The U.S. government added Sudan to its list of state sponsors of terrorism in 1993 over allegations that Bashir’s Islamist government was supporting Islamist militant groups, leaving Sudan ineligible for badly needed debt relief and financing from the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.

A senior State Department official said America might remove Sudan from the list and assures the two countries are in active discussions. “Compensation for the victims of terrorism remains a priority for the U.S. government. The United States and Sudan continue to engage regarding certain terrorism-related claims,” the spokesperson said.
