RISING OCEAN LEVEL AND CLIMATE CHANGE AT IT AGAIN!!!!

Before the lockdown officially kick-started in Lagos on the 30th of March, 2020, I had to quickly tidy my work area on one of our sites at Victoria Island where I was carrying out wall treatment. When I was done, in my usual manner, I started my journey back home en route the popular Remi Olowude street. I ply this route, firstly to cut off the humongous traffic that often builds up around Four Points by Sheraton towards late evening on week days, and secondly to catch a glimpse of the Atlantic ocean which I relish as some parts of the Remi Olowude street has close proximity to this huge water mass and you can virtually feel the power of this nature's giant while driving through that point.

Fast forward to Thursday, 7th of May, 2020, barely four days after the President relaxed the lockdown, I was plying same route and was greatly shocked at what I saw around what I will describe as the sharpest bend on this street, just 200 metres away from Twinwaters and about 400 metres from the popular Lekki Leisure event centre. The last time I passed through this road was about 39 days ago and now it's almost looking like I missed my way! Around the sharpest bend on the street, I saw a raging Atlantic ocean which had successfully broken through the sea wall. It didnt end there, the charging water mass was also forcefully transporting boulders and debris from the broken sea wall towards the motorable road and had successfully deposited some on the road hindering the smooth flow of traffic at that spot.

I saw the urgent need to act and quickly had to pull over, grabbed my phone and took a video of the event. I also spoke with a Vulcanizer working around that spot and he attested to the fact that the water transported the boulders from the shore to the roadside, a reality I was grappling to accept!

A developing country will eventually end up becoming a developed country if it consistently and persistently flexes her muscles doing the right things. In our case as a nation, we have to keep practising the right things like learning to take proactive steps before an impending doom becomes a present day reality! . What I mean is, we have to repent from this attitude of waiting for a situation to go out of hand before taking a serious action about it.

What is likely to happen if this water mass eventually breaks through its final barrier - the slightly elevated boundary of the Remi Olowude street? We stand to experience a #flood that will destroy many structures, may lead to loss of lives and negatively impact the socio economic activities in Nigeria! Is that an exaggeration? We cannot downplay the economic importance of Eti-Osa local government of Lagos state as it is the home to most of the country's corporate business headquarters , multinational companies and investment organisations. The Lekki Free trade zone is also home to several constructions and projects valued at trillions of dollars. Undoubtedly, anything that affects the Lekki Epe Express way, which is less than 900 metres(second roundabout specifically) from this flash point, affects the connection of these businesses to its supply chain partners, eventually affecting the Nigerian economy.
Let's all take responsibility by sharing this post till action is taken by the appropriate authorities.

Lagos is a city that may explode into crisis soon and we saw it coming that's why I already moved to Lugbe area of Abuja and we have rest of mind ......What I saw when I was living beside Alpha Beach in 2008-09 when the entire Alpha beach village was ransacked and submerged in sea.... We saw it coming and just like you..whenever we draw their attention to how some debris enter the village... They play it down that its because we are JJC...but this particular day in 2008.. The sea broke violently into the village... The baale palace was consumed imaging people swim to Igbo efon for safety... Many loss their life's properties were destroyed.... All because the baale always take monies from trucks loading protective sands everyday.. at the Beach... Fast forward to the Eko Atlantic beach you're talking about now, Some people still pass through kuramo to pack protective sands that is why the protective stones keep sinking.... Its about time if nothing is done...it will not be funny... God save us o.
