According to business day there are 79.28 million active bank accounts, registered with Nigerian banks and since inception till date, an average Nigerian can ascertain that;

Majority of Nigerians would prefer to keep their money at home
Nigerians banks exploits their customers with High charges on transactions with Taxes
Nigerian banks always have high interest rates on loans and low interest rates on fixed deposits
Poor ATM services.
The above mentioned points are the challenges of a Poor and average Nigerian, let me also say it that the rich are not comfortable with the banking system in Nigeria.

Before the commencement of lock down on 30th March 2020, the central bank of Nigeria (CBN) gave a directive to Nigerian banks to operate during the lock down as the have been given approval by the federal government to operate. Banks did not operate until a month later, they were ordered to operate by the Federal Government upon the commencement of easing the lock down.

Within the period of the lock down, Nigerians had encountered a lot with regards to finance and transactions as the banking sector was the great catalyst to this events. Some of the challenges encountered by Nigerian were:

Poor ATM services. Majority of the ATM’s where not funded during the lock down as Nigerians were left with the options of patronizing mobile money agents for deposit and withdrawals. The mobile money agents too were stranded as they had huge amount of cash in their possession.
Many people got their ATM cards seized by the machine and were left stranded.
Some transactions had errors, I.e. transferring money to a third party and not delivered while their accounts were debited, some accounts had multiple debits while trying to make a transfer that is not producing result.
Due to non-banking operations, business owners, group and individuals were keeping their monies at home and business venue and as a result, thieves were breaking into homes, shops, business centers churches and etc just to cart away with monies. A lot of Nigerians, business owners and traders most especially, lost huge amount of cash during the lock down.

Before the lock down, individuals, cooperate bodies and banks made donations to the federal government for the fight against corona virus, there was a particular bank that made a donation of one billion naira (N1,000,000,000.00), two weeks after the donation, the said bank announced the closure of some of her branches and retrenchment of some of her staff, then why the donation in the first place?

In my opinion, banks should have suspended charges on all transactions till the lock down is over, by so doing, life will be easier for the common man. It’s high time for our banking sector to review her process of operations and become professional in their services.
