Taking Out The Gmat by kambo(m): 5:07am On Jan 21, 2011
i intend to write the gmat exam. i hear its a challenging test to
write and people take months to prepare to get a good score.
would like to know how to study to ace this test.
i'm not keen on maths at all ,
what books or resources could deliver a high score , in your opinion.
i'm looking for feedback from those who taken the exam and aced it
or got a good score in it.
subjectively speaking what is the minimal time one can put in to get a
good score. i'm not into that 2 months stuff.
never studied for even a month on any exam so i don't know how i'll
cope with such a long 'year' of book gazing.
i'v bought copies of kaplan gmat and mcgraw hill (2009)
- are they adequate? are they good enough.
if not suggest to me what materials will deliver the learning i need
. i can only take this exam once , dont want to try it a second time.

Just keep practising the gmat book you have or if you have access to a centre where you can revise there with the help of the tutors

Even though I'm decent at maths, (I got a B in GCSE  grin) Seeing as most recruitment in Nigeria involve some sort of test i'll definitely buy the GMAT book or just buy it to refresh my memory

Just take one section at a time and make sure you understand what you are actually doing not just checking for the answers

Dedicate 2-3 hours a day and test your self afterwards

try the job/vacancies section or even the travel section I'm sure many would have for graduate school admission

I took the GMAT and I got a fairly decent score, I don't think I aced it though especially when I consider those I'm benchmarking myself against.

I used KAPLAN and the Official GMAT guide as well as a book by ARCO to prepare for the essays. My memory is a bit hazy on the name of the last book; took the test back in 08.

Probably the most valuable resource is the set of practice tests from the MBA.com website, These will really help you prepare for the actual test day and from what I've heard and experienced the most accurate predictor of what your actual score will be. The layout is exactly the same and you will find that taking these practice tests will make you feel a lot more comfortable on test day.

Finally, I used free downloadable LSAT material to practice for the verbal section. LSAT questions are particularly nasty and way harder than GMAT so if you can begin to score decent scores on the LSAT reading comprehension and critical reasoning practice tests, you'll be ready for most of what the GMAT has to offer in those sections.

Above all, pray to God if you believe in Him and ask Him to calm your nerves on your test day. The moment you lose your nerve and start to panic, Its probably already over. Just relax on test day and practice a lot before cos its really all about consistent practice.

Btw, I made an overall score of 740/800 (97%) : Quantitative 49 (88%) Verbal 42 (95%) and 6.0/6.0 (91%) in AWA.
