A Medium Onions Is More Expensive Than A Litre Of Petrol In PH! by Rhino5dm: 6:52pm On Jan 22, 2011
After a week long (official)visit to portharcourt (oil city wink) i decided to have a chat with the locals on politics and inquire about  Gov. Amaechi's total transformation of Rivers State, i was not  disappointed with his score card.

went to stadium road to have some fun at ocabique(strippers live!, lap dance and BJ, . . . ,  tongue tongue tongue) and take a shot at the cost of living and was totally  surprise to learnt that the cost of a medium onions goes for seventy naira(70 naira)  which is five naira(5 naira) more than the cost of a litre of petrol.

cant just believe that have to ask a local vendor around rumou okuta myself to confirm the price.

please comfirm this if your living around port.

From what i heard, it was from a fallout of the Jos crisis. Supply of Onions from the North slowed down to a trickle, shooting up the price in port harcourt.

That's what i was told, though.

Seccessionists should take note of this development which is indicative of things to come, if they have their way. Feeding may become quite challenging. lipsrsealed

In the event of seccession, Cameroon and Benin Republic will feel any gaps. The concerned parts of Nigeria will only need to build better connecting roads, sea ports and rail lines to those countries; they will recieve fruit and veg from Cameroon and Benin Republic, while Cameroon and Benin Republic get exported manufactured products in return. QED.

In the long term, areas like Obudu, Mambilla, Benue and Plateau will be made into highly productive agricultural zones that will feed all of West Africa. . . What was the food problem again?

Port-Harcourt is expensive compared with the services you get for your money.Housing is quite poor but expensive.Abuja is expensive but the quality of housing is worth the pay.

Why have you people not turned yet your region to the agricultural zone that will feed all of West Africa, I mean what da heck are you waiting for?  Your governors have received upwards of $20billion in the past few years and have done nothing to improve your agric situation, to say the least. What about your entrepreneurss, are there any in that area at all?

I suppose its better to lazily rely on oil provided by nature while accusing others of bein parasites, than to get off ya b.utts and produce something! Err, forgot to mention, terrorism and bunkering serves you better. olodo

I recall mentioning Obudu, Mambilla, Benue and Plateau; none of which are oil producing, my reply was about transport links, manufactured goods etc, and it covered vast areas of Nigeria, so how come your reply is only about oil? shocked

Since oil, seems to be a subject that has you by the jugular, lets deal with it. How do you turn land polluted by parasites into agricultural zones overnight?

Nigerians are happy to have commenced the ejection of oil parasites. That project will hit completion in a couple of years and Nigerians will begin to see the the rich possibilities in a life after parasites. Oil is a resource that should have enriched the nation, instead it became a source of embarassment as we began relying on fuel imports to power our cars and industries, because the parasites could make deals that sweetened their pockets.
In the most tragic of ironies, oil also became a source of poverty for the communities with oil bearing lands. Again, it suited the uncaring parasites to simply sign documents and turn a blind eye to the suffering of fellow citizens in the hands of foreigners. The Niger Delta quickly became (and remains) the most polluted wetlands in the whole World, it also bears the accompanying distinction of being the most polluted oil producing area in the whole World.

Nigerians can only cry halleluja with the joy of seeing the parasites lose power. We now know it is in our hands to move forward, to stop being mere spectators in our oil industry and actually begin to take part in the drilling and prospecting as is done elsewhere in the World; the average person on the streets will be hit by the job opportunities and continued fall in the price of fuel, due to our vastly increased refining capacity (3 new refineries are already on the cards) that will see us importing less and less as an oil producing nation.

Nigeria has changed forever. You best join the train in a positive way and stop happing on seccession and ethnic division. Let those things be a last resort, and since we are no longer held by the throat by parasites, seccession should not even be mentioned at this time. Or are your people planning to leave?

bla bla bla, story, story.

You sound as if every square centimeter of your land area is oil producing and has been destroyed by pollution. You cannot deceive anyone here. You have more than 70% of arable land in the region, why have you not developed the land? Please name a single item that has been produced by your industries (if they exist) or your entrepreneurs. I’m sure you cannot name any. Wadooo

Charlie, ignorance is the big problem here. There are vast industries from glass to fisheries to steel in my state; we are easily among the most industrialised. Please take some time out to travel by road, from Sapele through Warri to Ughelli.
You will also find that vast tracts of the Nigerian press, banking industry, airlines, boat buliding and marine services, timber and plywood, textiles, Nollywood etc are owned by people from my area. We are developed well above the Nigerian average, a place like Warri is dotted with several heavy engineering businesses (small, medium and large).

I could go on and on. . .

We do not need oil; but in Gods wisdom, 35% of Nigeria's crude just happens to be under us; so please stop living your life for it, lest you give yourself a heart attack. Why not carry this strange love of oil to places like Niger or Chad that are nearer to where you come from?

As for agriculture, we have several fishing industries and supply rubber, oil pam produce and shrimps for export.

The vast majority of our oil is off-shore and less than 10% of exported crude oil in the past 15 years came from onshore activities. Stop the lies.

You don't need oil, ko? You have several fishing industries - sebi the ocean is close-by. Ngwanu, tell us -  how many fish have you all exported as a result of your massive industrial actions in the fishing area?  1 fish, abi na 2 or three. Please don't make me laugh.

Are you this slow? The joke is on you pal! You claim that 35% of Nigeria's oil comes from your region and that you don't need oii. You further claimed that you have several sectors fully developed including airlines, boat buliding and marine services, timber and plywood, textiles.  You forgot to mention that the majority owners of several of those companies are not from the region - they are primarily Igbos, Hausas, and Yorubas.

You are yet to produce a single item for export with any meaningful impact to our economy - lazy people! I lived in the area and used to plant tomatoes in my backyard. I ask you again, name a single product that you have exported out of the region at a significant level.  Think of the answer and understand that the joke is on you. Do you produce tomatoes for local consumption? Even oinions can grow in your region, have you planted any?  cheesy

You people are just as lazy and unproductive as most other regions. All you depend on is bunkering, terrorism, and allocation from oil proceeds. You are parasites as well. olodo

I couldn't agree with you more. The governors, businessmen, "entreprenuers", and people of the area have seriously failed. I mean, the can't even plant enough onions to feed themselves, they have nothing but fertile land.

Obasanjo said in 2003: "You cannot produce anything because you are lazy. It is your laziness that is making you to make all these demands". Obasanjo was right then and his statement is still correct today. These people are lazy and only believe in handouts, bunkering, and kidnapping. Truth be told.

Who's this ndu_chuks guy? If you're from the North - as I can glean from this discourse, please know that Nigeria is moving forward at a very fast pace. All oil parasites resident in the north (and elsewhere) have had their fill of blood money from ''oil stealing''. Game's up.

And I must say Beaf's reply to your question is spot on. We're from Delta State and we know how much we contribute to Nigeria's purse every month. Can you please tell us what your people up north contribute to the nation's purse every month/year? - inclusive of all the onion, carrot, sugar-cane, cattle and potato that comes to the south from your end. We await your response.

You need to understand that with or without oil, the South will definitely survive (if na only food be ya concern).

I’m afraid that you have allowed your tribal/regional bigotry to becloud your objectivity in this case. The bitter truth in my comments have nothing to do with North or South. You people are lazy, pure and simple, and suffer from the same oil resource curse which afflicts other regions.

How in the world can your leaders squander over $20billion in a few years without providing the conditions that will foster agricultural development? It is disgraceful that you cannot produce enough onions for yourselves. Your outrage is misplaced pal.

You have not contributed a darn thing to the economy as you claim above. Oil is underground and you had nothing whatsoever to do with its being there. Additionally 90% of exported crude oil in the past 15 years is from off shore activities. I stand by my statements.

Lets assume for once that your claim that oil export from the country for the past 15 years has been from offshore activities (I will like some link or site to verify your claim), what about the money realised from the sale of the volume of oil produced from onshore areas in the previous 36 years? And if you must know, oil production from onshore areas is on the rise again - miltant activities have been largely curbed and oil operators can at least produce oil/gas from these areas again. Shell's Gbaran Ubie's project in Bayelsa State is a mega oil/gas project (http://www.vanguardngr.com/2009/11/ahells-gbaran-ubie-project-gulps-1bn/;http://oilandgasbrief.com/knowledge-base/gbaranubie-integrated-oil-gas-project/759/; http://www.shell.com/home/content/media/news_and_media_releases/2010/gbaran_ubie_07072010.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+shell_media_releases+(Royal+Dutch+Shell+plc+media+releases)) that will deliver a large amount of power to the national grid and the south-south region.

Before we deviate from the crux of this discourse which is your claim that we're not doing anything about agriculture in the south, especially in the oil producing areas, the south-south people are generally lazy, we can't feed ourselves, etc etc; I suggest you re-read Beaf's exposition above again to make you understand that over here, agriculture-wise, we are doing far better than you think.

You need to also understand that the climatic conditions that aid the cultivation of these food crops - as we have in the North is not thesame as is in the South. A JSS1-3 Agric student will tell you that tomatoes, pepper and onions are better MASS cultivated in the North because of favourable climatic and soil conditions. Down South, what we produce is rubber, palm produce and timber. We also produce Cocoa and cola for export. These cannot be cultivated in the north. You can argue on end that there's been a lot of effort in terms of research and others to make a lot of these things grow anywhere.

Now, can we say that the Northerners are lazy, since they do not grow cocoa and kolanuts for export in their region? I hope you now get my drift.

On states contribution to the national purse, there's no doubting the fact that the South South has been the real major contibutor to the survival of the entity called Nigeria. That's not to spite the other region's effort to up the purse of the country, but the simple truth is that 90% of the contribution is from the South-South.
