Nigerians And The Statement "Do You Know Who I Am" by KingAzubuike(f): 1:49pm On Jun 13, 2020
It's a common statement among Nigerians which is usually followed by "I will lock you up", " You go tey for prison " etc.

" Do you know who I Am"

But in reality you're a tennant earning a meagre salary.

" Do you know who I Am"
But in reality you're struggling to make a meaning out of life.

" Do you know who I Am"
But you never chop better food for two days.

" Do you know who I Am"

But you still dey run up and down to submit application.

Dr Ojuolape Sapara, a UK-trained consultant psychiatrist once believe it's usually caused by a narcissistic personality disorder

Many Nigerians believe it's due to ego, which I also do. I believe everybody just one be boss for their own lane and that's one thing holding Nigeria backwards. That's why you see lecturers frustrating students, military dey oppress civilian, even vigilante dey form boss for street residents. Person wey get money pass you will tell you "I will lock you up". I witnessed a scene around ikotun, Lagos the other day, two drivers had a disagreement over who should be clear road for who. One was in a SUV (Nigerians symbol for big man). The other was in a sedan. After some argument, the SUV man came down and started shouting "do you know who you're talking to, do you know who I am, I will lock you up".

The funniest thing, I recognised him from my vantage point, he was a driver in a company at egbeda, obviously he was sent on errand and because they give am SUV drive he dey form bigman. I've also witnessed another scene where a woman had a disagreement with someone and next thing she said was "do you know who I am?". Before anyone could say jack, she called her soldier husband to the scene and he came with a convoy. Coincidentally, the man the woman was arguing with happened to be a senior officer. She was embarrassed.

Dear Nigerians, nobody cares to know who you are or is it because you have a brother in the force , or because you took pictures with tinubu at a party, or because you have a friend who has a friend who has another friend that is a General in the army, or because your boss uncle at work knows someone that is friends with the IGP? . Infact you simply don't know who is who and that alone ought to give you some sense. What if you're messing with the wrong person? Alot of bigmen live a low-key life, some of them walk around in tshirt , shorts and palm. They even use public transport so you don't just know who is who. Before you make the statement "Do you know who I am", be sure to know too well about the person you're directing thw statement at.

Lol if you've never done this, you're probably not a Nigerian. Some people don't have more than 5k in their account but will be telling conductor do you know who I am. All because of 20naira change. Some people also use education to brag too. Just ordinary BSC that you have you start feeling ontop of the world telling your opponents "Do you know who you are talking to?"

Nice write-up.
