Dear Nairalanders,

I would really love to know and get your opinions concerning wealth and training of children.

We all can say and agree that Childhood was fun to some people and to the rest it was either rough or a bit rough.

The stories of childhood differ just like faces, with culture, upbringing, location, religion, amongst others.
some who were born with silver spoons, had their wealthy parent dine with them on marble dining tables with their bips, sitting on high stools with their legs not reaching the floor to have their meals.

Those set had their dad's Benz or Peugeot car steaming and ready to drop them at school with their filled up lunch pack and a maid that washes and iron their soiled uniforms when they return from their ivory tower schools, where teachers don't dare flog them.

The other sets had their meals on floor with siblings struggling and eating fast to get filled up,then walk for kilometers with their cutlass and school sack bags and get whips for going late, and once they reach home, they go around the streets hawking different kinds of products to make sales because that's where the next meal lies.

We all have our different stories...
But personally,though I was born with a silver spoon and had a father who was so extravagant that if not for my mother who put restrictions on some things like;
I had to learn how to walk down to school, though it wasnt too far, learnt how to wash my uniforms if it gets soiled, learnt how to be in school without a lunch pack and many others.

My dad always had to complain that she is making it look as if I'm from a poor home..
This actually helped me in life today,no doubt, but was it the right approach?

I have seen many families whose children got spoilt because of the extravagance of the parents.
They wasted till they had none again..
Some even went as far as going into drugs.
And I have also seen some turn out as very good managers.
Likewise,I have seen poor family kids grow up with bad financial management skills, despite the fact that they came from a poor home and others as good managers too...

Now my question now is,
Is there a formula to this?
Would you want to expose your kids to your so much wealth as a father or mother by giving them what they want ? so that if they see money,it wont be something new to them.
Or would you withhold it till later in life and teach the. the hard way by not giving them much..?

Your opinions please...

one night,my dad bought two big loaves of bread, alf crate of egg, enough tea and milk for dinner.for a family of six.we all ate and drank enjoying our selves, then went to bed.

the next morning we were waiting for breakfast,no breakfast until 1 PM ,
we gained courage to ask daddy'daddy we no go chop?'

he smiled and said that last night when we were all enjoying ourselves, nobody asked what we would eat the next day.he said that he did it to teach us lessons that we should always plan for tomorrow.

that was how we didnt eat until night.
sometimes he gives us garri to drink and sleep,if you use sugar ,you wont use groundnut.

so today ,i can eat only ones a day.

its training.

what if you give ur child everything he asks for today and cant afford it tomorrow, the child wont be able to cope but see you as a bad person.,thats my opinion sha

You can’t deny your child a lifestyle they are born into.
It’s not feasible.

If you live a luxurious lifestyle, where will the kid go while you’re enjoying your life just so you don’t expose them to money?
If you have nice cars, will park them in the garage and take public transportation whenever you kid needs to go somewhere just so they don’t get exposed to money?
Won’t your kid have a room in your nice house?

If you travel to different countries on vacation, will you leave your child at home so they don’t enjoy the that luxury with you?

It is what it is.

You can teach the value of good and ernest work. Teach kindness and tolerance. Encourage them not to take anything for granted. They will turn out alright

Growing up in poverty and lack doesn't make children turn out right and growing up in riches doesn't make children turn out great either.

If parents neglect the necessary early education on how to grow up to become a responsible member of society such child will end up becoming a nuisance
