Who Teaches Tribalism"? Family Or Community". by nony43(m): 10:28am On Jul 04, 2020
I have been on NL for long and keep observing threads where tribe A fights tribe B, Tribe B vs tribe C, it is like we don't love ourselves yet we pretend to do. So my question is " who teaches tribalism"?
Family or community".?

Tribalism in Nigeria is taught by both the family and the society alike.
Although the pattern of exhibition of it on Nairaland baffles me so much.
It's like morning tea, lunch and dinner to some persons on Nairaland.

It's the community and my reason is this.

As a Yoruba and a Catholic Christian, I grew up schooling and living with kids from Igbo tribe. My parent never for once spoke ill of them and they were my friends. We go to the neighborhood together, jump people's fences to pluck mangoes and cashew, and atimes we get chased by dogs.

My first encounter with tribalism was in secondary school when my teacher,an Igbo woman said, "all these Yoruba people and nonsense talk talk, in fact I wonder why that girl is friends with you." This was my first time experience that we tribalism... As a young pupil, I had been taught that there are different tribes in Nigeria but I had no idea that it could be used as an insult.

Now that I am grown, I can tell that over the years and experiences I have had, there is something fundamentally wrong with the community or if I am being specific, the Igbo relationship with other people.
It's time to kill the hate and stop preaching tribalism

.... Neither family nor community teaches tribalism.

Only fools are tribalistic.

Whenever or wherever you see a tribalistic fellow, always know that he or she is a fool.

I said it!

They are ALWAYS the first to start all those rubbish.
Very intolerant people.
And when you give it back to them hot, they start wailing like the bereaved.

Yorubas are the most tolerant people in this country.

Most of the nonsense they even try with us, OSUs can't try it with themselves.

Life experiences teaches us who to trust and who not to trust..

Do you know an Ibo woman we grew up in the same neighbourhood goes about calling people Ofen Nmanuu and Otondo happily with Yorubas not knowing the meaning, yet she eats with youruba, lives and raced her kids in Yoruba environment... This is something Deltas, Edo , Calabar and Hausa would never do

And as if that isn't enough for hate, go to any Ibo dominated market and report your personal experience on fake products, fraud, gross disrespect

Goto same Hausa dominated market and see honesty and love see Hausa are nice and honest to a fault that we call them Abokii

Visit Facebook and type Radio Biafra London page, and also google Arewa news page

Honestly tell us what you read from Ibos and Hausa Facebook users and tell us which is acceptable and which is derogatory

Please note that my dad's best friend who they joined the. Service same day and retired same day, still maintained a cordial relationship decades after is a delta man, and my mum's best friend is from Imo state

You are not different from the person you intend to denounce. So, an ugly encounter with one Igbo teacher is enough proof for you to conclude that there is need to instigate a "fundamental change" that would improve how Igbo people relate with other ethnic groups. This is to say there is something inherently wrong about the Igbo people that make them to be targeted by other people. This comment is obviously motivated by deepseated hatred of the Igbo people, and reveals what closet ethnic supremacist you are.

Ethnicity and racism are inculcated by parents to their children -- knowingly or unknowingly. When a child is born, she or he is not conscious of differences in ethnicity, religion, or culture. It is the parents that point out these differences and guide the children on how to treat and respond to them. Even before the community gets to influence children, the parents have already stuff them up with values they believe in.

I will say both family and the community- physical and the E.community. My family is quite multi tribal, so I never experienced prejudice. But when you go out you begin to hear 'Yoruba Yoruba' people, Yoruba people dirty, Yoruba too black, and abuse of tribal marks, ofe mmanu, you begin to think twice. What's to say my Igbo/Hausa colleague no dey yinmu for my back?
Will a Yoruba woman not continually struggle to get validation from her igbo in laws for the rest of her life only on the basis of her tribe and vice versa? .Us here we are conditioned by society to think vices like drugs and fake products are Igbo only thing when it is not true.

Ps; I wrote N.gbati N.gbati, and Nairaland turned it to Yoruba Yoruba.

NEITHER.
IN GROUP BIAS

Whenever we belong to a group,we tend to have positive feelings toward member of such group and negative feeling toward other group member.
my friend vs not my friend
my family vs not my family.

Society reinforces such.
