Awolowo was released in August 1966, few days after Gowon took over and Ojuku NEVER had control of the federal prisons in the East then. Reason was because Ironsi corpse was even still missing and Ojukwu wouldn’t have took command of Federal installations then.

Banjo was released in May 1967, after Ojukwu already declared Biafra and took control of the Eastern region as an independent Biafra nation. That was how Banjo fought on the Biafran side.

What I want someone to tell me is how Gowon, who was less than a week in power, managed to release Awolowo from a Region he had no control?

Even Ironsi, who was recognised as substantive leader by the Eastern Region, could not have released Awolowo without ordering Ojukwu to to so

So how did Gowon release Awolowo when neither Ojukwu nor the Eastern Region recognised Gowon as substantive leader?
