To understand what QVGA means, first let's look at resolution.

In technical terms, The graphics display resolution is the width and height dimension of an electronic visual display device, such as a computer monitor, in pixels (Wikipedia)

In simple terms, it is how clear or bright an image is.

A general overview of the types of resolutions currently

240P

480P (Standard Definition)

720P (High Definition)

1080P (Full High Definition)

1440P/2K (Quad High Definition)

4k

There are more subdivisions of resolution types but these are the most commonly used.

The sharpest today is 4K. The latest gaming consoles offer 4K resolution. Newer Televisions offer 4K resolution too. The usual standard for most midrange phones display is 1080P or full high definition. The cheaper budget devices use 720P.

Then most cameras on Smartphones boast of recording 1080P resoultion at 30fps (frames per second). Some even boast of going as high as 2k.

A QVGA (quarter video graphics array) camera is a dedicated video camera that can only shoot at 240P resolution.

The resolution it shoots at is very poor and pixelated. The QVGA format has been abandoned for 720P long ago. In fact very few smartphone makers include them on their devices except a few.

So if you have a QVGA camera. It is nothing to be proud of. QVGA format had it's heyday in the 1980s before it was superseded by Standard Definition. In the old java phone of the late 90s and early 00s. QVGA was also used as the display resolution.

Can QVGA still be found today? Well yes some phone companies stil offer dedicated QVGA sensors like Transsion holdings. (Tecno and Infinix).

And to add to what the OP said, QVGA resolution is a 320x240 resolution. The screen resolution you will find on most landscaped screens of some Java phones like the Nokia Asha 200, Nokia X2-02 etc.

I'm very sorry for bringing Tecno into this, but I have to say it.

Does it mean Tecno is taking us back to the Java days with the introduction of a dedicated QVGA lens on the Spark 5?Yes they are.

But to a tech-illiterate Nigerian, it will be seen as something posh or subject to boast of like "My phone get QVGA camera" not knowing that the acclaimed "posh QVGA lens" would be better if it wasnt there and his ignorance is being exploited by Tecno etc.

Na people wey dey find quad camera na.

I cumming piss o

Infinix tried to cut production costs by using a cheap 720P IPS LCD yet they still priced it very high.

Mi A3 uses a 720P display to save costs as well but in exchanging Xiaomi used an Amoled screen that supports in display finger print and still priced the phone very affordably.

So its the old Qvga camera they add to their phones that makes it expensive.. na wa o

Meanwhile, mr atheistandproud... I see some phones come with HD+ display, and on Youtube, your videos are capped at 720p,

Is It safe to say that HD+ display is also 720p?

Can you also make a post on pixel per inch what it means for screen display

Thank you

You are doing well..

Vivid, expressive. However, all of your writings could easily pass for a technical report except for some that may reflect a bias. You may not be able to do both in one writeup therefore, maintain a marketable and a marketing personality separately. Quite alot of your readers are just for the enlightenment while others could make other use for it. Directing to one makes it a thematics for one.

You lost me somewhere towards the conclusion by trying to end on a lighter node.

I can't really.

It's up to you.

Depends on what you want

Android One or MIUI

Amoled or LCD

720P or 1080P

3 or 4 rear cameras

32mp selfie or 13mp selfie

In display fp reader or rear FP reader
Re: QVGA Cameras On Smartphones (what Are They?) by Norman4real(m): 6:11pm On Jul 18, 2020
The QVGA cameras you're complaining about are not the main cameras, they're meant just for aesthetic purposes to make it appear like the phone has plenty of features, but it's not necessarily have a negative impact on anything so I see no reason to complain about it
