Madagascar’s coronavirus herbal concoction is not as potent as claimed to cure the coronavirus, said Nigeria’s state-run pharmaceutical research institute.

In a reported presented to the Health Ministry on Sunday, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) said safety studies show that Covid-Organics (CVO) do not alter the normal physiology of the animals.

In April, Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina officially launched the CVO -- an organic herbal concoction -- claiming that it can prevent and cure patients of the novel coronavirus.

Obi Adigwe, NIPRD’s director general, told reporters that Madagascar officials were hiding CVO analysis.

“They are hiding a lot of things and I think it is possible that they know that they don’t have strong science backing up their claim. But our own analysis does not show any proof that it can cure COVID-19,” he was quoted by local daily The Punch as saying.

Adigwe said the analysis they presented in the report is more detailed than what they received from Madagascar.

“CVO reduced cough frequency with the maximum dose tested, producing an effect equivalent to that produced by the centrally acting cough-suppressant, dihydrocodeine,” he added.

Madagascar’s president had urged citizens to protect themselves from the novel coronavirus by drinking CVO.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned against the use of CVO without medical supervision and cautioned against self-medication.

The Indian Ocean island of Madagascar has also donated CVO to several African countries.

Earlier this month, Madagascar authorities re-imposed a total lockdown in the Analamanga region due to the rise in coronavirus cases. It has also opened new coronavirus treatment centers.

Madagascar reimposes lockdown in capital as coronavirus cases surge

A member of the National Defense Force stands at a checkpoint as part of measures put in place to combat the spread of coronavirus in Antananarivo, Madagascar, in March.
(CNN)Madagascar has reimposed a lockdown in its central region, which includes its capital Antananarivo, in an effort to tackle an increase in coronavirus cases in the city, according to the country's government.

Schools and universities in the city have been closed and nonessential travel within the region is prohibited until July 20.

Authorities say churches will be shut, and public gatherings of more than 50 people have been banned.

The government said troops have been deployed to affected districts to ensure residents comply with containment measures, including a curfew in the capital city, the government said.

The decision came after the island nation, with around 27 million people recorded 209 new cases in the capital Saturday bringing the total number to 2,941 coronavirus cases, according to the World Health Organization.

More than 25,000 tests have been carried out, according to the country's health ministry.

President Andry Rajoelina sent a contingent of doctors and troops to its second largest city, Toamasina, to combat the virus outbreak after two people died of coronavirus and bodies were reportedly found in the city's streets in May.

The government had initially locked down the country's two largest cities -- Antananarivo and Toamasina as the virus spread in March.

Rajoelina lifted the restrictions four weeks later and began promoting a herbal tonic made in the country, claiming it could prevent coronavirus and cure it though it had not undergone any international clinical trial.

The tonic's distribution across the country and to some other governments in Africa sparked controversy and several warnings by the WHO and other experts, who said its efficacy against the virus was unproven.

Journalist Andry Rabemananjara contributed to this story from Antananarivo.

But when the WHO warned us to be careful of the drug, we insulted them that they were against Africa.

Now, we are calling it "Concoction"

Funnily enough, Nigeria could decipher that the 'concocted Madagascar stuff' is no qualified treatment for the virus but can't create theirs, even if a fake one. It's not a spoiler but I genuinely think the WHO is behind this hate speech. If you've had sth to do with them, you'll understand. About the medicine, well it could be the virus no longer responds to the treatment. This is a biological weapon and the lab inventors will stop at nothing (not even Madagascar) in achieving their mission.
