*SECURITY TIPS AGAINST CUSTOMERS

1.Never allow a customer test drive,i.e if there is no deposit for the car he or she wants to buy, even if the buyer shows seriousness, there must be a deposit before test driving.

2.If you must test drive with your customer, make sure you get a picture of the client/customer who wants to purchase the vehicle before driving.

3.If you own a car shop and at the end of the day get a serious who wants to buy any of your cars and also wants to test drive,NOTE:make sure you get about 4 to 5 STAFF that will accompany in the test exercise.

4.If you are a car shop owner and a big time dealer in car deals- NOTE:make sure your have top security guards about 3 to 4 or if possibly 6 top security officials (MOPOL or MILITARY POLICE or ARMY) safe guarding the car shop. When you get a customer that wants  purchase a vehicle in the car shop and insisting to test drive the car, make sure that about 3 to 4 of the security officials join the test drive exercise for full security over your vehicle.

5.When a buyer comes with a friend or a family relative,if the buyer wants to test drive - dont allow the person who he came with accompany in the test drive exercise, let the buyer go along with the seller and alongside with the 3 to 4 of the security officials.

4.If you don't own a car shop and you are an upcoming car dealer that displays vehicle on the street or filling station for saleNOTE:All your cars for sale should have very very little fuel close to empty point. If the buyer wants to test drive tell him to make a deposit if he is serious to purchase before the test drive exercise.

5.Install a car tracker if you can afford it,when a buyer wants to test drive-he or she has to be accompanied with 3 staff or top security officials.

A few questions, Msochi.

I've always understood a deposit on a car to be non-refundable. So, a potential buyer wants to test drive a car, pays a deposit, then decides he / she can't live with the car, and decide not to buy. What happens to the deposit? Does it get refunded?

The Tracker idea's a good one, but how practical is it, to install Trackers on say, 10 cars you have for sale?

If I was looking to buy a car, I was asked to pay a deposit, then 4 burly guys insisted on coming with me, including the seller, I would be concerned! Most buyers in Nigeria deal in cash, so suppose I was carrying 2 million Naira, what's to stop these guys from relieving me of my money and cellphone, then throwing me out of the car?

Sure, some buyers are dishonest, but then, so are a lot of sellers. There should be trust on both sides. If you as a seller don't feel comfortable with a potential buyer, then it's your call - you can tell the buyer the car has a deposit on it, needs some minor repairs, you have an emergency at home to deal with etc. Simply put him / her off!

I personally wouldn't want to test drive a car under some of the conditions you've posted above.

In the same vein, not all sellers / dealers are honest. It works both ways.

I do not think anyone will buy your cars based on those conditions. Why should I be accompanied by 5-5 hefty men whom i do not know from Adam. What stops me too from thinking your men will snatch my cash.
I sell cars and what I advise is that let one person accompany the seller and let another car follow them behind. You dont make your potential customer feel like a criminal.

Very important point you've raised here.

Even though some of these points are harsh, they make so much sense given that this is Nigeria. We've had cases of dealers reporting stolen vehicles by potential customers on this auto section and I'm so sure there are many other dealers who have been victims but didn't post such on NL.
The only amendment I'm proposing is those hefty men should follow the test-driven car without the knowledge of the customer.
Re: **security Tips Against Customers** by Nobody: 11:54pm On Feb 19, 2011
Yes, covert monitoring of a test-driven car is fine.

I didn't get an answer from Msochi - what happens to a deposit paid by a potential buyer? If after driving, he / she decides not to buy a particular car, does he / she get his / her money back?
Re: **security Tips Against Customers** by msochi: 11:36am On Feb 21, 2011
if you have a depositors registration form including the terms and condition that says "FUNDS PAID NOT REFUNDABLE", once your client/customer goes through the registration form and agrees to the terms and condition you and signs, then after test drive he/she will not have the authority or right to have his/her money back, but if you don't have a depositors registration form and your customer has made a deposit for the vehicle he/she after the test drive exercise pls do refund the money back to the customer.

thank you

Where is the world in this day and age will a person pay a deposit for an item and if he doesnt want to go ahead with the transaction, he cant collect his deposit back, probably less some deductions?
If i want to buy a car and make a deposit, if i dont want the car anymore for any reason, I can and should be able to get my deposit back. All the seller has to do is to make deductions for breach of contract.

Not sure if you're a dealer, but I doubt you'd sell any cars under your terms and conditions. Too complicated, one would have to hire the services of a solicitor, just to make any sense of the whole procedure.

A test drive is just that - trying out a car, one may, or may not buy. Why would one have to pay a deposit for that? The seller linked to this "deposit scheme" wouldn't need to sell any cars. Dependent on the value, 6 test drives later, he'll have earned more than the car's worth, and still own it!
Re: **security Tips Against Customers** by msochi: 6:27pm On Feb 25, 2011
incase the buyer has an intention of stealing your vehicle,so the buyer has to pay like 50 percent deposit, for security reasons, some buyers are robbers

you were making sense before you posted this crap.
Why would I make a deposit for a car I haven't test-driven? I can bet you won't sell a bajaj with this awkward "terms and conditions" of yours.
Goodluck anyway

I'm missing something here. Is someone suggesting I need to sign a document to forfeit part of my cash even if I end up not buying it? What did I read about breach of contract? Which contact? Contract only exists if a sale has been made, not before. Even then, it is not cast in stone. Even if the buyer buys the vehicle and later realises that the specification is not what was advertised, he should be refunded in full. It is in the interest of the seller to make the buyer feel valued and comfortable. The fear of someone not buying your car after test driving can be managed by being honest about the make, model and condition of the car in your advert so that whoever is test driving knows what to expect. The customer is always king. That should apply to Nigeria as well.

A 50% non-refundable deposit, just to test drive a car? Are you sure of what you're saying? Because, you're not making any sense. Sounds more like a racket, rather than selling a car. Pretty much like you're trying to pressure a prospective buyer into buying a car.

How many cars have you sold under these conditions?

@ OP

Some of your tips make a bit of sense, while the rest are just too hilarious

For instance, why would you tell your potential buyer that"look customer I don't trust you,I suspect you might steal my car hence these five hefty men will have to accompany you on the test drive"

Secondly, why do you think anyone in their right senses will pay 50% of the cost of your car as non-refundable depositeven if it were refundable,I guarantee you not so many buyers will be comfy with a dealer that asked them for 50% deposit

I'm afraid I have to follow Sienna's thinking that you may actually be a newbie in the auto sales business

Now, he's at a loss for words !!!

msochi:

And what makes you think he won't disappear with the car? After-all he only paid 50%, and the car is supposed to worth 100% not 50 !!!

CONCLUSION :- This guy just wants recognition here; but sadly he got the wrong footing !! Thats why i love Nairaland, no illiterates in here !!!

deposit thing all depends on the car dealer, trying to see if that idea was ok, well, fine if the the buyer is to test drive your car without any funds no problem as far as your hefy security guards are alert to monitor by accompanying the buyer on a test drive exercise

Great tips! Customer theft is very widespread and is often dismissed as minor crime. Its better to make well trained and alert staff form the basis for good crime prevention. You need to consider all of your circumstances and then choose the preventive measures which suit you best.
