Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’Foundation (HURIDE), has demanded the immediate removal of the Comptroller of Correctional Centres, Ja’afaru Ahmed, over allegedly corruption and incompetence.

According to statement made available to the moment, the group Chairman, Chief Dede Uzor Uzor, Ahmed should as a matter of urgency resign or be sacked if he failed to resign on his volition.

He asked President Muhammdu Buhari to immediately overhaul the leadership of Correctional Centres to curb the monumental corruption in the centres.

He further said that the resolution of the group after their meeting in Awka, is to sack the CG over dangerous development in the Correctional Centres especially in Enugu State, where inmates gain access to handsets, which they use to blackmail, intimidate and defraud people.

According to him, the development is rampant in Enugu Correctional Centres.

The group chairman also called for overhaul of the Controllers and Deputy Controllers of Correctional Centres through massive transfers because this monumental corruption and crime could not have occurred without express consent of warders.

“Unfortunately, instead of investigating the matter, the Comptroller-General typical of Nigerrian officials has been trying to suppress the matter by instigating security agencies to arrest and detain HURIDE chairman.

He added that since 14-days ultimatum they gave for the overhaul has since expired, the group are mobilising all their members and human rights coommunity to join them in the massive protest for the removal of Comptroller-General, some controllers and Deputy Controllers of Correctional Centres, especially that of Enugu Correctional Centre.

“Our investigation still showed that those inmates still defraud the people with impunity and they were being backed by the Warders and Controllers,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the group has eulogised the director of Department of State Security (DSS) Mr Alex Agada, his Deputy, Mr Tunji Ola for their professionalism and pragmatism in steering the security apparatus in the State and their contribution in reduction of crime in the State.

Uzor said that the group urged the Director of DSS and his men to beam their searchlight on Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi to stem the tide of hand set snatching syndicates who most times use mini buses and other public transport system.

“Their Local Government Unit Commanders, should do the same in semi- urban centres in the State, they should also focus at Upper Iweka in Onitsha, where snatching of bags, handsets and other valuables has remained the order of the day.

“The Security outfit to prevail on the State Government to checkmate the gradual return of motorbikes in different parts of the State and put measures to checkmate its influence especially in Onitsha and other regulated areas,” he appealed.
