Good Evening All.

This tread is just for reference purpose.

If you own a car, try as much as possible to know some basic things as well as DIY.

I drive a 2008 Toyota Camry, Yesterday night, I was returning from a trip to buy Suya, suddenly my engine went off after making a turn to my street (though before then, there has been this sounds that comes with turning my steering). I tried cranking, to no avail, after like 4 attempts nothing happened, fortunately an electrician was passing by, he said the starter motor is bad, I gave him 12 spanner, removed the positive terminal on the solenoid, did some cleaning, fix it back. Then cranked engine again, no crank from the engine, every pulley stiff.

At this point he left, put a call through to my mechanic (my kazeem), he came, tried rolling the Engine manually but it's stiff, he then concluded that the crankshaft chain inside the engine has cut just like that.

It was already 10.50pm, we had to roll the car down to my house agreeing that today we will remove the top cylinder and inspect the chain. First thing this morning, I put a call through to Kingreign and Opusdei1 explaining what happened and what my kazeem told me, my issue was then narrowed down to check all the pulleys and the starter motor.

I went to a nearby auto store bought the right spanners I needed, removed the starter, checked for issues with the solenoid, everything looks fine, installed it back, then with my 19 spanner I removed the Serpentine belt rolled all the pulley one after the other, everyone was moving freely except for the power steering pump pulley that remained stiff. I proceeded to start my car, lo and behold the engine responded as usual without any unusual sound as against what my Kazeem told me. At this point I was relieved, no more opening of engine.

With my 14 and 17 spanners, I was able to remove the power steering pump (though spent 4 hours) without having to wait for my Kazeem to come neither was I picking his calls. Sourced for a replacement, drained the steering oil and refill with new one. At one crank my vehicle came back alive.

I was later imagining what would have happened if I had waited for the kazeem to come open my engine, that would have been the beginning of the end of my 2AZ engine, having to cough 300k out to buy new engine.

For car owners out there a little DIY can save one from unnecessary spending.

Lol.. It has been said here times without numbers, always get a scan tool.

Again always pay attention to details, your car have been giving you that noise but you ignore it.

As for the repair industry in Naija, we still have a long way to go, the annoying thing is these guys just don't want to upgrade, i mean how can you just decide to remain exactly where you are for years forgetting that technology evolves.

Imagine using 1999 knowledge to fix a 2019 problem.

Not everyone is based in a big town or city. If you work in a branch located in one of those LGs far from major town or city you must surely use kazeem one day. Sad but true cry

How about scanning your car and telling the kazeem what's wrong with it Hope it won't look like an insult to kazeem, like you're teaching him his job? cheesy

Most times, this is what I do.

I tell him what exactly is wrong and what should be done. Nothing more

May I inform you that a scan tool won't scan a broken pulley or snapped belt?

A scan tool in the hand of someone that's not knowledgeable about what's happening and how to take note of certain discrete data from the car would be useless.

Some cheap cloned scan tools also have been discovered to give wrong codes.

Interesting, but still it's advisable you get a scan tool for your car, isn't it?

They are not completely bad.

The issue is that a very large percentage of them are clueless and being relied on to solve problems that are obviously beyond their knowledge or capabilities. Its like the blind leading the blind.

I can relate with this. Had a similar experience with my Accord DC but it was the alternator pulley that got stuck. I drove the car and parked the day before...no issues. Next morning car wont crack, sounded like a dead battery, just click click.

Day1 - Got a new battery, same issue. Battery guy said its kick starter. Left car at home, went to work.
Day2 - Mech came, changed kick starter, same issue. Mech said he has to open top engine, will be back with his tools and boys the next day.
Day3 - Mech came prepared with his boys. In the process of getting ready to open top engine, he removed serpetine belt. Voila he noticed alternator was stuck. Na so God saved my engine and pocket as well...lucky me.

Yeah there's that. But sometimes even after finding the code and telling them what you suspect, it's like you're speaking French. They nod but you know they don't buy or get what you're saying.
An electrician recently checked my car to fix an issue. He was complaining that I might need to get a new fuse box with wires because rats have been chewing the wires. I just kept quiet because I knew the wires "eaten" by the numerous kazeem rewires I patronize in my locality. Steady peeling with their pliers to test with bulb grin

The location of my oil filter makes it hard to remove or install so I get no choice than to continue servicing with my kazeem. undecided

I can gladly remove plugs and clean some sensors comfortably. cool
