BARELY 24 hours after the Adamu Ciroma-led Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) called on opposition political parties to gang up against the candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming election, the presidential campaign of the party has warned Mallam Ciroma against making inflammatory statements that could derail the ongoing electoral process in the country.

In a statement signed by the Director of Media and Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Mallam Abba Dabo, in Abuja, on Wednesday, the party wondered why Mallam Ciro-ma, “a well-respected states-man, will associate himself with causes that were at variance with national interest.”

The PDP, while acknowledging the role played by Mallam Ciroma in the formation and nurturing of the party, as well as his contributions to the national development over the decades, lamented that it found it strange that the elder statesman would involve himself in such a sectional pursuit of NPLF.

According to the statement, “we are, indeed, at a loss as to what he hopes to achieve by openly calling for the destruction of a house he laboured so hard to build.

“As a true democrat, we expect Mallam Ciroma to submit to the will of the majority as freely expressed at the last national convention which has been globally acclaimed for its transparency.

“To continue holding tenaciously to divisive positions at a time the entire party and the nation are embarking on a process of healing and reconciliation does not speak well of his hard-earned reputation.”

The party, however, advised Mallam Ciroma not to submit himself “to manipulations by non-PDP members of the NPLF, whose interest was to capture power through ignoble means.

“It is our sincere wish that he reviews his current position quickly and avail his wise counsel to the Jonathan/Sambo ticket, which is the choice of the PDP, where he is a prominent member,” the party said.

It will be recalled that the Ciroma-led NPLF had on Tuesday in Abuja, after a meeting, resolved to work against the candidature of President Jonathan, insisting that the northern region must produce the next president.
