WHAT ACTUALLY IS AN INFECTION?

I actually decided to write this because of the abuses I have seen. Almost everyone is always talking about infection. But only a few know exactly what it is...

All in all,  that's the purpose of this article. It is aimed to achieve this -to enlighten you on what infection actually is. And what infection is not...

In essence, infection is the invasion and multiplication of microorganisms in your body tissues, with or without causing symptoms.

But remember that some microorganisms have our bodies as their homes. So you may ask,  is everyone not infected by defaul? The answer is no. You get infection only when an organism is seen where it should not be naturally seen. Or When it multiplies beyond the required quantity. An organism that is naturally seen in the large intestine, becomes an infection if they gain access to the eyes, vagina, nose, throat, etc. An organism that is suppose to be found in the vagina, when found in the throat becomes an infection. That's it!

Infection is localised. There is no disease on earth called infection. You must qualify it. So you cannot say,  I have an infection. No doctor will understand that language. But you say the part of the body that is infected. For example, I have an infection of the hand,  I have infection of the urinary tract, I have an infection of the skin, etc.

And each of them have their own medical terminology. But that's not  necessary for now.

So,  you can have infection of any part of your body. You can have infection of your nails, and can also have infection of your hairs. From now on,  do not say,  I have infection. There is nothing like that. It is a general term. But you can say,  I have infection of my penis, or I have infection of my vagina. The reason is because each of the body parts have particular types of organisms that will likely be involved. And that determines the drug to be given. I hope this serves to tell you what infection actually is.

CAUSES OF INFECTIONS

Bacteria  Eg, Tuberculosis, Gonorrhoea
Fungi Eg. Candidiases
Viruses Eg. AIDs, covid19
Protozoa Eg. Malaria

Re: Infections: "It Is My Pleasure To Educate Nigerians On This" by Odoctor(m): 7:48pm On Aug 21, 2020
DRUG TREATMENT OF INFECTIONS:

1. Bacteria - Antibacterials aka Antibiotics

2. Virus - Antivirals

3. Fungi - Antifungals

4. Protozoa - AntiProtozoans

So before you enter a chemist shop to ask for Antibiotics, how sure are you that you have bacterial infection?

STOP TAKING ANTIBIOTICS WITHOUT DOCTORS PRESCRIPTIONS PLEASE! IT IS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, NOT MINE!

Nice one. The way antibiotics are been abused by Nigerians is rather alarming. No wonder there has been a steep increase in antibiotics resistance by microbes in the bodies of Nigerians.

[b]There is nothing like toilet disease. people use it as a means of saying where they got the disease. But in most cases, they are referring to urinary tract infection.

But going by its meaning strictly, so many diseases can be gotten in the toilet, including sexually transmitted diseases, haemorrhoids, depression, typhoid, etc. It all depends on what you do in the toilet.

Cure: depends on the disease. Contact your doctor.

Yes, urinary tract infection involves your kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra.

Yes,it does have solution. But the issue is to be sure what you called UTI is actually UTI?

Have you seen a doctor? If yes, be should be able to prescribe some antibiotics that will help you. If no, or you just went to lab, please do see a doctor , if you are not satisfied with the doctor, you see the next, or a specialist nehprologist, urologist, gynaecologist(if you are woman), or infectious disease physician.

Thank you.

Good that you came up with this write-up, especially to enlighten Nigerian female patients.

They're very fond of saying 'I have infection" when they come to the hospital, and expect the doctor to understand them.
This could be very annoying and frustrating at times.
To them, things like malaria, hepatitis, pneumonia, etc, are not infections.
The only thing they know as 'infection" is STD.

I hope they'll read this and get enlightened.

The average Nigerian's level of enlightenment on health related issues is almost zero.

If you've not practised abroad where an average patient is very enlightened, you won't know medical practice could be very enjoyable.
Everything about Nigeria is real bullshit.

What of HIV?
Re: Infections: "It Is My Pleasure To Educate Nigerians On This" by Odoctor(m): 1:31pm On Aug 22, 2020

What of HIV?
HIV infection attacks your CD4 cells. CD4 cells are found in the blood. Once attacked, the defence system of your body is taken away, and you are prone to other infections, that will do the real damage - TB, covid19, Pneumonia, Dermatitis, enteric fever, etc.

So you're wrong in saying every infection is localized since clearly CD4 cells are not localized?

No, I meant every infection is specific. By saying 'I have infection ' you have communicated. The 'infection ' must be qualified.
