25 Surprising Facts About Igbos You Aren't Aware Of. by Bibliophile1970: 11:54am On Aug 24, 2020
25 SURPRISING FACTS YOU ARE NEVER AWARE OF ABOUT THE "IGBOS".

1. The Igbo tribe is the first indigenous African tribe to engage in a post colonial war in Africa.

2. The only tribes in Africa that practiced democracy and egalitarianism before colonialism were the Ewe of Ghana and Igbo of Nigeria.

3. Apart from Nigeria, African countries where indigenous IGBOS are located are in Gabon*, Sao Tome*, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.
(*- The Igbos here were refugees taken to those countries during the BIAFRA war)

4. The only set of Igbos in Igboland that speaks the purest Igbo Language is the Isuama people of Imo state and parts of Anambra state. They are regarded as the progenitor of all other Igbo sub groups(like Ika, Ikwerre, Enuani, Onitsha, Agbaja, Ohuhu, Owerre, Izzi, Ezza etc).

5. Most light skinned Igbos are of Anioma and southern Igboland(Southern Anambra, Imo state and Abia state) origins.

6. Most dark skinned Igbos are of Enugu and Ebonyi states origins.

7. The only state in Igboland where Abacha(Africa salad) is widely eaten is Enugu state.

8. Though being united by one single bloodline, each Igbo sub group has different cultures and traditions.

9. The biggest Igbo clan/sub group is the AGBAJA clan. People inhabiting Udi LGA and Ezeagu LGA in Enugu state are Descendants of Agbaja.

10. In Haiti, there is a set of Africa-Americans who term themselves as "Ibo Lele". "Ibo Lele" simply means "I[g]bos from Elele". Elele is a city in Rivers State.

11. The Igbo tribe is the only tribe in Nigeria whose cultural and traditional activities were tied to the ancient customs of the Biblical Israelites. Some of these are:
- New Moon Celebration
- 8th day circumcision
- separation of menstruating women in a room
- Patriarchy and many more.

12. The Igbos share a common paternal ancestor with haplogroup Y-Chromosome DNA "E1B1A".

13. The only tradition common in all Igbo groups is the NEW YAM FESTIVAL.

14. As you go from West(Ika/Igbanke area in Edo state) to East(Arochukwu region), average height of the average Igbo man increases.

15. As you go from the Northernmost part of Igboland to the Southernmost part of Igboland, average heights of the natives decreases.

16. Every Igbo parent had his/her first denomination in the Catholic Church.

17. To easily identify an Igbo person in public, here are just three tips to know them:
- good muscular physique due to the hard and starchy solid foods they consume daily.
- a Catholic chaplet or Catholic prayer beads around their necks.
- about 70% of them are light skinned.

18. The indigenous Igbos(Ikwerre, Diobus, Etches etc) in Rivers State possess blue eyes.

19. The biggest commercial hub in Igboland is located in Onitsha.

20. The most educated and brilliant set of Igbos are from Imo state.

21. The only geopolitical zone in Nigeria with the highest concentration of beautiful ladies is the South East( Zone of the Igbos).

22. To easily distinguish a Western Igbo(Anioma) from an Eastern Igbo:
- check his/her names because most Aniomas bear archaic Igbo names like Chizie, Achuzia, Okwe, Ndulue, Olaedo, Olauda etc.
- the Aniomas are more muscular than the Eastern Igbo.
- Most Aniomas aren't business minded unlike their fellow Easterners.

23. The Igbos, when outside their native lands, possess stronger unifying bond amongst themselves than when they are at home.

24. All Igbos are too clannish i.e they are too keen to Patriarchy.

25. Highest concentrations of Igbo Muslims can be found only in the Northernmost part of Igboland(i.e Northern Enugu state and Ebonyi state).

Many of the points here are ridiculous or just simply wrong. Some of them.

4. There is nothing like purest igbo. Missionaries in Sierra Leone assumed (wrongly) that Isuama was the purest Igbo and origin of all Igbo people because the Igbo recaptives in Sierra Leone used a form of Isuama as their lingua franca.

5. There's no statistical data available on the distribution of lightskin in Igboland. This is purely conjectural on your part, or at best anecdotal.

6. Same as 5. Conjecture.

10. Ibo Lele has nothing to do with Elele. Ibo Lele is a name of a Haitian spirit (or lwa as it is known in Haiti) which was developed there by Igbo slaves.

11. False. These so called 'Israelite' practices are common throughout Nigeria and West Africa.

13. Some Igbo groups didn't have New Yam Festivals. In contemporary times, it has been elevated to the level of an all-Igbo event, but it was not always so.

14. This is a strange assertion. People on the Eastern periphery of Igboland are stereotyped as being shorter on average than most other Igbo groups, but here you claim they are taller. Whence did you obtain this claim?

15. Some colonial sources made this claim. Is it true though? Any data on this?

16. So not true. The Anglican communiom began evangelism in Onitsha environs earlier than Catholics, and had won converts before Catholicism came. On the Eastern axis, Presbyterianism also began winning converts before Catholicism came.

It would have been more correct to say Catholicism is/was the biggest Christian denomination among Igbos.

What has Biafra got to do specifically with Anambra now?

The individuals that have been at the forefront of the push for Biafra in contemporary times, are they from Anambra? Uwazurike, Nnamdi Kanu, they be Anambra men?

And my question is why did you drag Biafra into it, as if Anambra people are the ones singlehandedly spearheading Biafra?

And I don't know who 'your people' are. I'm not from Anambra.
