A bit surprising that Effiong felt this way.

He was definitely right about Ikot Ekpene. That is my mother's hometown and it was gateway to Igboland. It should have been defended. After the fall of Ikot Ekpene, the Igbo heartland was vulnerable. Attacks on Umuahia and Aba meant the end of Biafra.

Effiong is a person hero of mine. He always spoke the truth. God bless his soul.

Why kill yourself. . .This definitely is a war you cannot win. Ojukwu is a hero to Igbos and your sentiment what ever it is will ever be immaterial.

Just try to live with it

Do you then agree that Ojukwu was a self centered egomaniac, who would broach no dissent?

This is beyond the pale of my imagination and a statement borne of out sentiments. Granted that Effiong was one of the Biafrans officers that had my reserved unflinching loyalty, the defense of Ikot Ekpene with his reference to defense of Nnewi has no military strategic values. He spoke like unseasoned veteran on that subject. Ikot Ekpene was not more strategically important to Biafra than Calaber, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Onitsha, Ogoja, Owerri, Uyo, Oron or Ibano.

The unwarranted killings that drove Ojukwu to declare the state of Biafra is still going on in the jos / benue region, however they are yet to seccede and the FG is still standing aloof not able to save the situation,

Ojukwu rather than seccede had 4 possible options
1.  either fought off the hausa fulani mutinous soldiers or
2. have with drawn all the igbos in the north to the east or
3. have simply kept quiet and allowed igbos in the north to face what jos/benue people are facing to day or
4. even have abandoned his duty post and fled like Ogundipe.

Any of the options taken would have resulted to him being replaced by another officer probably a Nigerdeltan or middle belter and either being sacked or retired.

Probably that was what led him to seccede . For those blaming him, I know ojukwu wasn't perfect but what more could he have done to save that dicey situation.
Re: Effiong's Thoughts On The Civil War by Dede1(m): 7:53pm On Feb 24, 2011
If not for mere symbolism, why would Nigerian vandals ever want to capture Nnewi? Nnewi is just a hometown of Ojukwu and had no military strategic importance to Biafra. Granted the town provided home to the headquarter of 11th Division of Biafra army that defended Onitsha ferociously, Nigeria's 2nd Division would have rushed  to Uli airport without setting eyes on Nnewi.

The same scenario goes to Ikot Ekpene. Both 1st Division and 3MCDO did not have to capture Ikot Ekpeme to threaten Aba or Umuahia if not again that Ikot Ekpene is a hometown of Gen Effiong.
