"Bars and Lyrics of Breakthrough: A Comprehensive Survey of KvngKiLa's 'Broke Rapper".

By Nsikak Ekikor.

Just only when I had virtually stampeded into conclusion that " Payday " will remain the sole track off KiLa's discography deserving of panoramic overview, Bio-ibogomo Numomoipre introduced me to "Broke Rapper"! Barely on its initial listening, the gripping bar appeared groovy with its smash tinge of club bangers yet sounded even more appealing than " Payday " albeit KiLa has never dropped a joint below the aesthetics of classical preference. "Broke Rapper" is deserving of a comprehensive survey in that it has the esoteric quality of the engrossing rendition of the fictional Nightingale cited in the Romantic ode of John Keats.

Of course you have known that KiLa and EkazBeats artistic intercourse have never resulted in middling creation or surfacing of less titillating sound. Of course you have known that the outcome of their alliance will always engage even the most indifferent mind in a free and swift flight to cloud nine and infinity; to the horizon far away in the airspace next to the heaven's gate.

The song begins with a portentous instrumental liken to a sound that would accompany the sudden appearance of an apparition in an occultic movie or the serial display of breakdancing step in the defunct famous P-Square's "Get Squared" musical video shot in the early 2000. KiLa has made a huge mark from the cadence standpoint as he got the entire bars in sync with the soundtrack whose pulse is quite complex for average rapper to navigate through without difficulties.

Contextually, "Broke Rapper" is a narrative of an impoverished lyricist who has lately gained stardom after conservative years of stagnation and fruitless musical voyage. The theme of breakthrough has dominated the entire single as each bar in the four impressive verses portrays the different shades of testimony of the rapper's headway after many years of misfortune. KiLa chronicles the pulse of his breakthrough in the chorus.

"Dreams of a broke rapper finally coming true/through,

Dreams of a broke rapper finally coming true,

Been underground all of my life I made it out

I'm due/dew,

Dreams of a broke rapper finally coming true/through

Dreams of a broke rapper finally coming true/through,

My mind stuck to the money something like a glue.

The chorus depicts a vision/dream propelled by commitment and tenacity, thus the rapper would not only dream but stuck his "mind to the money like glue", without being discouraged by the numerous years he had spent struggling as an underground rapper.

The chorus annotated in the preceding paragraph is revered specifically for its propensity to double entendres in that the couplet bars can be understood in two different ways. Although it affronts semantic normalcy, double entendre is an outright indication of an artiste's stylistic predilection within the discourse of Hip Hop.

Let's us consider this:

"Dreams...................coming true" is a statement that depicts the manifestation of the rapper's vision while "Dreams.................. coming through" explains the progressive state of the rapper's breakthrough. In the third line of the chorus, the first syntactic order as in:

"I made it out so I'm due", delineates a state of absolute/concluded breakthrough while " I made it out so I'm dew" is a statement that depersonifies the character of the rapper through indirect comparison with the object "dew", which is defined as the very small drops of water that forms on the ground during the night. Figuratively, the line is a metaphorical description of the rapper as an emerging lyricist _" small drop " that has made a mark that takes only the OGs to accomplish. Here, the sentence fragment "form as water on the ground" signifies a state of accomplishment.

However, the song under review is an autobiographical sketch of the rapper. The thematic concern revolves around his identity/personality. He is seen firing shots at Hip Hop heads whom he has considered less prolific. He has claimed superiority and tend to dominate the entire game as he states in the second line of the verse preceding the last:

"I ghost rappers, mehn my name is a crime."

That is the uncomfortable truth that have necessitated this review, KiLa is a force to reckon with. The project is worthy of every accolade it has enjoyed, for me, KiLa has made a timeless craft here and he is the most qualified upcoming rapper who will settle in the mainstream consciousness in a no distant time.
