At the first wedding, God the Father gave the bride away to the groom and witnessed the couple's interaction in his santuary garden

Genesis 2:18-25

"Then the Lord God said,"It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.  So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.
So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the opening. Then the Lord made a woman from the rib and he brought her to the man.
At last! the man exclaimed " This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She would be called woman,'because she was taken from man,'" This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.
Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

Married love is thus a binding covenant commitment before God. Breaching that covenant (e.g. thru adultery) is a crime against persons and against God, who is a divine witness to and guarantor of the marriage covenant.

Jer 3:1
"If a man divorces a woman and she goes and marries someone else, he will not take her back again, for that would surely corrupt the land. But you have prostituted yourself with many lovers, so why are you trying to come back to me? says the Lord.


Hebrew 13:4
Give honor to marriage and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery

Although marriage is exclusive, it is not private. It is legally declared in public, with community recognition, witnesses, and accountability.

Marriage is a metaphor of the Lord's relationship with his people, the first with Israel, and then with the Church.

A marriage points to something greater than itself- God's people (Christ bride) await the return of Christ (the groom). Married Christians are called to live in unity and dignity as they anticipate the wedding feast of the Lamb.

CONCLUSION

Marriage is "sacred". It is a relationship that cannot be broken on a whim. Divorce is not an option. Can we divorce God? The bible says that Christ will live forever with his faithful people in glory. Likewise believers must stay together faithfully until death - FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE.

Revelation 21:9
Then one of the seven angels who held the seven bowls containing the seven last plagues came and said to me,"Come with me! I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb,"

Marriage is an earthly representation of the covenant a believer has with Christ which cannot be broken. All those who listen and accept this message will become "The bride, the wife of the Lamb"
