The clean shave is simply a Roman culture that became a norm in all Europe as a result of the Romanisation during the reign of Roman empire. It survived the ages just like the Roman calendar and the Roman alphabet most European(and their colonies) uses today.

A beard tax was introduced in Britain in 1535 under Henry VIII. The amount collected by the monarch increased with the beard grower's standing in society – making facial hair a status symbol such that all bearded men were forced to the pay the charge and carry around a copper or bronze token to show they had paid the tax.

There was even a time in the Russian history during the reign of Peter the Great(of the Tsar dinasty) in 1705 who imposed a beard tax on russians that kept beards as a way of making them to be more Western European. I mean he literally gave police the rights to forcibly shave beards of anyone who wouldn't pay the tax in public grin
reminds you of Kim Jung Un with his approved hairstyles in North Korea right? grin

Is keeping of beards unprofessional in the modern era?
Beards aren't considered unprofessional all the time, in all settings and for all men. Unkempt beards are just as unkempt hair and apparel is considered unprofessional, but it's wildly inaccurate to suggest that all beards are unprofessional. What's really unprofessional is an unkempt appearance

nice history but one thing is that the norse people and arabs grew theirs and even romans too.
just can't fit it into our modern nigeria setting.
we had afros back then which trend as at then.
my father had beard as to the likes of arabs but he was a christian.
all i've seen is old folks telling young fellas to shave while they had theirs during their young age.

Well I like keeping beards just that I get bored easily. Then I shave everything and try a new look.
