Phones are so important, aren't they? At the moment a whopping 5.22 Billion out of the world's 7 Billion population have them. Nigeria has nearly 186 Million subscribers so it's safe to assume that around that number of phones will be in use here.

My focus however, in this short post is to shed light on how you use your devices. A lot of people don't have much of phone etiquette. They just got phones and started using them without trying to understand best practices on their usage. Here are a few things we shouldn't do....

1. Shouting when making or receiving a call. This exposes you as lacking class and disrespectful of others. Re-initiate the call again if you are having difficulty hearing the person on the other side.

2. Typing SMS/Messages/Posts in Capital letters. This comes across as you are SHOUTING!!!

3. Looking at your phone repeatedly when talking to someone. This is disrespectful to the other person. He/she deserves your attention when in conversation with you.

4. Plugging headphones into your ears comes off as aloof/you don't want to be disturbed. While this is ok when you're at home it's unacceptable at work

5. Using your phone when driving, especially without a hands free device. I believe there's a fine to be paid of you get caught

6. Calling someone and when the person picks, saying, "Who is this?" when you initiated the call. This happens most commonly when you are returning a missed call to a number you don't know. It's in poor taste.

7. Flashing, the art of initiating a call and then cutting it before the person on the other end can pick it. The objective, usually is for the other person to call you back. It can be really annoying

8. Those who call at odd hours of the day just because they have a phone in their hand. When others should be sleeping. Such "Midnight calls" can be disturbing.

9. Taking unnecessary shots/videos at events. How many of those images do you go back to look at once the event is over?

10. Carrying smartphones around with cracked and chipped screens. This gives the impression that you're either sloppy, or financially incapable of properly maintaining your high end devices.

While the first 9 points above are focused on behaviour that can be changed with a decision, the 10th point requires better care and maintenance for you device. We've got a service in place that can help you protect your devices from breakage or liquid damage thus saving you up to 75% in repair costs.
