Nigeria’s army has promised to “maintain law and order” as protests against police brutality continued for the eighth consecutive day on Thursday. Flag-waving crowds headed towards the national assembly in the capital, Abuja, as people gathered again to block traffic on key roads in the largest city, Lagos. KEEP READING The army released a statement as demonstrators took to the streets to keep up pressure in a campaign that forced the government to announce the dissolution of a notorious police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The military warned “all subversive elements and troublemakers” and said it “remains highly committed to defend the country and her democracy at all cost”. The Nigerian army added it “is ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order and deal with any situation decisively”. Protests have been largely peaceful but Amnesty International said at least 10 people have died and hundreds were injured in the face of an initial harsh response by police in some locations.

He is correct! Endsars should end these protests.

I'm an estate agent and I've not done a single inspection this week as most of my business is in Lekki.

If government has dissolved SARS, for Pete sake, end these protests.

Anybody who says the #endsars protest to stop is a fool bent on keeping others in his same miserable condition.
Do you think Nigerians woke up one morning, ate and then randomly decided to protest against this menace we call leaders? These old fools?

2018, we protested and they said they have "dissolved" SARS
2019, we protested and they said they have "looked into the matter". No change.
2020, they want to feed us the same bullshit and sit down for the third consecutive year, and some fools who are not thinking about their children's future are busy saying we should go and rest in our houses cause the " target " of the protest have been met. Fools.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity and you want us to back down because small dust don day rise for your compound? Cowards!

so what you are saying is that the protests should end so that you can go and do your business but you expect a senator that is embezzling money to restructure Nigeria for you abi? This shows your character. I bet you are one of those people that don't give a damn if something bad happens to someone else but not you. Go do your inspection for Lekki na, nobody dey hold you.

The primary duty of the State is the protection of the fundamental human rights of it's citizens.

One of such rights is the right to peaceful assembly. The protesters are exercising that right. It is the duty of the State to provide protection for them and ensure they are safe from hoodlums, criminal elements and even unruly counter-protesters whether sponsored or organic.

Another of such rights is the right to freedom of movement. The state has a duty to protect the rights to unhindered movement of citizens who wish to go about their lawful activities at all times.

The State fails when it forcibly breaks up protests under the guise of upholding "freedom of movement".

The State also fails when it stands back and does nothing when protesters deny other citizens access to public roads thereby violating their rights to free movement cos it wants to be seen as supporting freedom of expression.

It doesn't matter who is in the majority at any given time - whether the protesters or the other citizens, the State must ensure simultaneous protection of everyone's rights at all times.
