Hello, i am wondering about the price of young calves in Nigeria, how long it takes for them to grow, were to buy them, who to sell them to, the land and facilities needed, etc. and how to make money from cattle farming in Nigeria.
I am also wondering if this is a viable business area and the risks involved.

5years! With commodities alone I can N5m in 1yr 6 months from 300k. Nobody should ask anything about cos I aint sharing, will love to but don't have the time.

@OP, pls don't bother going into cattle business, the thing is controlled by uneducated mafias in every single state of nigeria, you can go to the north to buy no problem but try selling it in the south to make a profit and you'll be shocked at the response you receive

I combined money with another guy from my state and we bought one and sent down, the third guy did same to kogi. The cows got to their destination but we were unable to sell, it was really really bad we eventually sold after plenty begging and we were warned never to try such again. You'll be amazed what this people will kill for. Now that you know you can investigate and see how you can go about it. Lest I forget our man in Kogi was also not spared by the abokis in kogi. Stop abusing and answer my question, this is not some cheap political gossip, if you know you can't contribute meaningfully carry your stinking bloated ego and leave the thread.

How can I be arguing blindly in something I know too well, where you there when abokis were harassing me, when I feared in the heat of it all I could be stabbed without knowing who did it?

When I was suppose to sell immediately it landed but ended up rearing cattle for almost a month? Free range-begging for space to keep full grown cattle.

I am reporting into this progressive forum for the first time. However, i have been following events once in a while. Now this cow business thing. I dont think the contributors on this issue has done justice to the topic. Firstly, may we discard the issue of illiteracy or literacy here. For you to make impact on anything in life you must take the pain to make research. Most useful information about keeping animals are available online.So we should not restrict out scope to the man in the Norther Nig. Let leave that to confirmatory periods. That apart, cow business i have tried on skeletal level but i want to tell this progressive forum that it is worth going into. I kept 3 cows in 2006 (1 year old each) which i bought bw 20k-25k.I gave them to a fulani man who kept them 4 a year before i soldthem for cash. I got tripple the money i used to buy them.

Today, very rich, educated and well to do nigerians are quietly into this business. All you need is a land. atleast 3 plot upwards depending on the size of your heard. Water supply is important and you need to fence the property. If you are lucky to find a land with a year round water supply, thank your star. it is advised that you look for it if you can to reduce the overhead cost. Your purpose for keeping the cattle is also important. Is it to increase stock, for quick cash (fattening and disposing) or for milk production?You need to know what you are out for. If it is for the first, then you must source for your bull carefully. Your bull must be healthy. Atleast a bull to bw 30-50 females would be ok. Do not keep more than a bull otherwise they fight and one gets killed. If its for fattening, you can get cows during the dry season at cheap prices and then fatten them to gain good weight before disposal for cash. You need a vet to check them once in a while. Within 3 months, you could be disposing and getting a new stock. Milk production goes hand in hand with the first reason.

U can go online; there are lots of information on the net on this, Need to do your feasibility study, U can go to the North on pricing, Be prepared to cough out between 45k - 55k for a medium size cow. It is always advisable to pick d medium size cos there is every likely hood of death if they are too small.

I can direct u to some places in Northwest(katsina) if u want to see the mkt 4 yourself.

Mafias are always in every mkt, They will choke you up, The best thing for is to find a friend among these traders and work under one of the big time guy in the mkt. U wont have a problem in selling ur cows; U can also use anyone of them to front for you, I have done it with simple comm here in the North and it works.

if the poster is interested in starting a standard cow farm over there, even the Mafia will come to your farm to buy b/4 thinking of going to far North to buy stock. Well, I am yet to see any standard cow farm down in the South. It seems everyone come to purchase from the North

The best place to buy cows in Nigeria is the mambilla area of Taraba state.

But the thing is: you need to bring in a Fulani into your team. Trying to make it as an outsider is not going to work.

Hint:

Do you want to buy and sell mature cows, or buy calves and grow them into mature cows (very expensive and risky, not to talk of the logistics of feeding them and medicating them, + vaccinations against bovine illnesses), or do you want to buy and slaughter?

Buying and slaughtering in your space in a designated abbatoir in Abuja or Nasarawa after buying in Taraba state is the best. One of my boys reared cattle as a young boy, so I have the info.
