PRESIDENTIAL candidate of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday said he would probe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)- led Federal Govern-ment’s activities in power sector if elected and sworn in as president of the country on May 29.

Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) presidential candidate, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, also disclosed that the country had spent over $10 billion on the power sector but had only managed to add 1,600 megawatts of electricity to the 2000 megawatts generated in 1999.

Both Buhari and Ribadu spoke at the presidential debate organised by a television channel, NN24.

According to Buhari, “we have to see what has happened to the resources spent on power in the past because we know where we were in 1999, how much we have spent and how much power we have now.”

On budget and the growing recurrent expenditure, Buhari stated that “our development plan should not be on ad-hoc basis” and that when he gets the mandate to rule Nigeria, he “will persuade Nigerian legislators to agree to earn less.”

Buhari believed that the leadership of communities in Niger Delta, and the youth have to be properly consulted before a lasting solution could be achieved.

Ribadu denied ever calling the party’s chieftain and former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu, “a looter of international dimension.

”The former chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said the statement he made before the National Assembly in September 2008 was that the case against Tinubu “has international dimension.”

He disclosed that he had never judged any individual before taking him to court on whatever charges.

The much talked about presidential debate, which commenced without the presence of President Goodluck Jonathan, also had Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in attendance.

While speaking on the crises in the Niger Delta, Mallam Shekarau asserted that the problem of the region was that “there is total loss of confidence in governance” and before a lasting solution would be achieved, “we have to address the issue of confidence first.”

Mallam Shekarau declared that the EFCC and Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) were only glorified police stations and constituted part of the leakages in government.
