It was a cool evening, ma was in the kitchen preparing dinner while I and my sister assisted her with ingredients one after the other. I was about 3 to 5 at the time.

All of a sudden someone raised a cry alarm from about 6 houses away. Many cries followed immediately. Each and every houses around me and afar was filled with cries. For some seconds I was shocked as to what is going on, then my ma’ joined them. The first cry actually was to inform the whole neighborhood of a death.

The cries got so intense that everyone came outside their house to cry and act drama grin I was terrified. I was trying to understand why the cries. To make matters worse for me, ma’ brought down the pot of soup, tied wrapper and left to the deceased house for group mourning cheesy. I saw all the elderly trooping to the deceased location and more intense cries emanated from there.

I and my sist were left alone at home, to make matters worse again, the sky turned red/yellow. I knew something bad had happened but I didn’t understand what and why. I didn’t understand that the deceased was actually gone and not coming back. I spent several time alone in mental confusion trying to understand what really happened and what would make people cry in that manner. The only thing I heard was so so person died, but I had no idea what it meant. In my mind I was thinking, why don’t you people chill and stop all these drama, he’s definitely waking up or coming back or whatever.

Lol @the sky turned red.
Childhood imagination... cheesy

I honestly can't recall the first time exactly that I witnessed death, because as a kid, I and my immediate younger brother used to go along with our mom to work (a government-run hospital) during some of her shifts.
And although she would tell us to remain inside the office, we nor dey ever hear word. We always found a way to escape just to play around – and while running around, we would usually come across a dead person being wheeled out from a ward or being brought in from an accident scene.

I believe that my inability to feel lightheaded and weird around dead bodies now, is probably a result of my early exposure to such things as a child.

When I lost my maternal grandma, on the day of her burial we went to retrieve her from the mortuary and the attendant requested that someone should follow him into the morgue to assist in lifting her already dressed corpse into the casket we brought.
My uncle who was present, her own son, refused... the man say lai lai he's not entering inside there and nothing will make him enter. cheesy Laugh wan finish me that day.
They were all surprised when I told the attendant I'll go with him. Although one of my cousins followed us anyway, because he wanted to match my confidence (dude likes to compete with me). grin

I remember not feeling a single thing while we were in there despite the fact that we were surrounded by at least six other corpses looking like dried meat all laid out on the table slabs.
