Nigerian military jet crashes, killing pilot

KANO, Nigeria — A Nigerian Air Force fighter jet crashed Tuesday while taking off from a flight school near the northern city of Kano, killing the pilot, officials said.
The plane, one of several Chinese F7 jets purchased by oil-rich Nigeria, failed to lift off from the runway the military flight school shares with Kano's Mallam Aminu International Airport around 12:30 p.m., witnesses said. The plane crashed while still on the airport's ground and immediately exploded.
Air Commodore Yusuf Anas told The Associated Press that the pilot died in the crash. Anas said the plane recently had been brought from an air base in Makurdi.
"The Nigerian Air Force headquarters has already set up an accident investigation panel to unravel the circumstances that led to the accident," Anas said in a statement. "Further details on the crash will be made known as soon as the family of the deceased pilot is informed."
Airport officials postponed some afternoon flights out of Kano, an ancient city in Nigeria's Muslim north, as workers struggled to put out the fire and clear debris.
Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, has one of the biggest militaries in West Africa. Its Air Force has a fleet including fighter jets, transport aircraft and the small jets flown by its president. However, mechanical issues have grounded its planes in the past.
In 2002, a commercial airliner crashed during takeoff from Kano's airport, which sits nestled among homes and businesses in the sprawling ancient city. The airliner crashed into a neighborhood, destroying homes, mosques and a school, killing 145 people. In 1992, a military plane carrying 163 people crashed just after taking off from Lagos.

May the soul of the pilot rest in peace. What a sad story. embarassed
What Nigeria is doing with those useless refurbished 1960's jumped up MiG-21's is beyond me.

Say no more! They are Chinese-made. The Nigerian military would have better chances, buying a Aba made product than the garbage produced in China.

Well. . . may the man's soul rest in peace.

Never d less, my sincere n deep heart felt condolence to family of d gallant soul departed.

As shown by the incident in which an American F15 tactical fighter that went down over Libya yesterday, engine failure can down even the best maintained a jet in a blink, and if it occurs at the point of takeoff, a crash is virtually guaranteed.

Condolences to the family of the pilot. His chances of deploying the ejector seat were slim at best.

@Jakumo,
I hope you realize that chinko F7 fighter jet was purchased by the rotten PDP administration GEJ currently heads. While the sad incidence is indeed painful, why would such not happen when the corruption in government right from the president down to the lowliest of messenger smells to the high heavens.

May the sould of the departed NAF pilot rest in peace.
Re: Military Jet Crashed In Kano, Killed Pilot by GAR3TH(m): 9:23pm On Mar 22, 2011
I believe it was a FT-7NI that crashed since the report said the pilot was in training. Also in another report I read they said there were two pilots, So I'm guessing one was a flight trainer and the other was a student. The report said that one pilot ejected safely but the other died in the crash. I guess he was trying to control and save the jet.

Guy cant you be more sensible with your posts? Must you bring politics and your campaigns to every thread? what has PDP and GEJ got to do with this?

The planes that crash in advanced countries in western europe must have been procured by GEJ too.

I hope you are not on drugs anyway?

The fighter jet does have ejector seats and one pilot did use it. In addition the jet isn't 'Shinko', Its fairly new with modern equipment. mechanical failure is usually the cause for most fighter jet crashes. Its because fighter jets are so complex in design.

It is getting pathetic these days that nothing goes wrong in this country without blaming PDP and goodluck.

It is not fairly new. Rather, it is based on the 1960's MIG 21, something from little after Hitlers time. In today's World, its a heap of waste metal at best.

I wonder how much that load of junk cost us? A country like Nigeria is meant to be much better armed, so that when we speak, the whole of Africa will salute, stand to attention and obey. Instead, we are like an impotent giant; the greatest example is how South Africa treated us in our own backyard, Ivory Coast.

All SA did was float one miserable warship to Ivory Coast, and all our huffing and puffing about a military intervention died out overnight. Just because, we have only scrap metal that can frighten only Liberians and Beninoise rag tag militia.

If cost is what made us stoop to buy that load of crap, there are cheap but highly capable fighter planes. This is the JF-17K stealth jet from China/Pakistan:

The downed plane was a trainer aircraft. Trainer aircrafts are usually cheap versions of the real thing (e.g. the NAF trainer ''air beatles'' of the 80's and 90's) expensive jets cost money (above $10 million or N1.5billion) and are not the first line of trainer aircrafts. Infact US and UK now use simulators cos the real thing are damn expensive, any mistake and its billions of naira down the drain. Thats also why driving schools use the the most rotten tokunbo for driving lessons.

Please can we have meaningful discussions on Nairaland - so when we insult anybody, its because they deserve it not because it  makes us feel good.

Condolences to the pilots family and the airforce.
Re: Military Jet Crashed In Kano, Killed Pilot by GAR3TH(m): 12:40am On Mar 23, 2011
Nigeria went for the F-7 because they are fairly cheap. . .and its similar to the Mig21 (in which nigeria operates) so its familiar to nigerian Pilots. Plus even with nigeria's old Mig21 we still dominate the skies of west-central africa. There is no threat to Nigeria, Its not like Ghana is going to attack us. so why buy expensive aircrafts like the F-22 which cost 150 million a jet or Su-33 which cost $55 Million a jet, when we already control the skies of west-central africa. Imaging if nigeria bought 20 su-33 jets, thats over 1 billion dollars. couldnt we use that 1 billion dollars for something else such as power. thats why nigeria bought 15 F-7 for $250 million which was reasonable. If Nigeria did buy su-33 or F-22 you guys will be arguing that Nigeria is wastefully spending.

Sorry I meant to say $100 million or N15 billion

Here is a list of fighter jets in the Nigerian Airforce's arsenal

It is reasoning like this that made SA disgrace us in our own backyard. Is it not Angola projecting strength on the same Ivory Coast in our backyard? Even Zimbabwe sold weapons to Gbagbo, and we couldn't cough. . . In our own backyard!!! angry
Who cares about dominating Central and West Africa? None of those countries is in our league financially (except Gabon, which has a smaller but more modern airforce than us). We should be speaking to Africa.
