Three first class emirs in Nasarawa State hurriedly deserted their palaces yesterday when the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) presidential candidate General Muhammadu Buhari arrived in the state for a campaign rally and attempted to pay them visits.

The Emir of Lafia Alhaji Mustapha Agwai II, his Keffi counterpart Alhaji Muhammadu Chindo Yamusa as well as the emir of Nasarawa Alhaji Hasan Ahmed II were all nowhere to be found when Buhari arrived at their respective palaces.

Buhari was in Nasarawa State for his North-Central state-by-state presidential rally. The CPC leader and his entourage that included the party’s governorship candidate in the state Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura arrived the emir of Lafia’s palace around 3 pm but the palace was locked with nobody to receive them. A CPC official in the state told Daily Trust that "we had earlier written a letter to the Emir intimating him of Buhari’s courtesy call. But the emir wrote to us saying he won’t receive Buhari because of his ill-health."

Earlier in the day, Buhari’s entourage was also in Nasarawa town. When they arrived around 10 am, the emir refused to meet with the CPC presidential entourage. Daily Trust saw angry youths shouting "Sarki ya gudu," meaning "the emir has ran away." It was a similar incident in Keffi, when Buhari visited Emir Yamusa. The gate to the palace was locked when Buhari and his supporters arrived. Youthful CPC supporters were also seen shouting "Sarki ya gudu, sarki ya ji tsoro."

Despite this however, Buhari managed to address a surging crowd from his vehicle, saying that he received information that Nasarawa State government "has threatened to dethrone any traditional ruler that receives me."

Addressing the crowd which gathered at the palace of the Emir of Keffi, Buhari thanked the people for their massive support promising to fulfill their hopes and aspirations if he is elected president next month. On the absence of the emirs, Buhari told the rally, "You shall be presented with the golden opportunity of electing a governor who will respect your traditional institution in a few weeks. I implore you to use your vote wisely."

Buhari’s spokesperson Yinka Odumakin said the absence of the emirs from their palaces at the time of Buhari’s visit was at the instance of Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma, who reportedly threatened to depose any of them who receives the CPC flag bearer. He described the development as "the panicky response of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the fiercest challenge the ruling party is facing from the CPC." He said that "from the palace of Emir of Nassarawa, through the Emir of Keffi to that of Emir of Lafia, General Buhari met locked palaces in spite of due notices to the affected traditional rulers."

Odumakin added, "But in his usual style of exhausting due process, General Buhari entered each of the palaces to fulfill all righteousness. What he lost in not being received by the emirs was compensated for with the mammoth crowds who received him affectionately in each of the emirates."

Both the Director of Press to Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma, Ibrahim Addra and the state Commissioner for Information, Mamman Alakayi didn’t pick their calls or responded to SMS sent to their mobile phones over the issue yesterday.

Gone are the days when the traditional institution means something and those in power often fears Emirs, OBas and the Igwes utterances.
But since this traditional institutions was hijacked and occupied by ex rogues or people of questionable characters and their penchant of trooping to Abuja each time a new man is in charge in their usual courtesy call.

They sold not only themselves cheap but the auro and majesty that usually surrounds their thrones, while selling traditional titles to politicians and the highest bidders.

Its not worth thinking that a mere elected govenor will be threatening an Emir of the land. Its unbelievable. What happens to this governor if he is to lose this election?

@Eziachi: Don't you think it is better that those traditional institutions have lost their power, though? They are very undemocratic, and imo should have little or no influence on politics  undecided Times have changed; it is only right that an elected official has more power/influence than an unelected ruler, in my opinion.

Custodian of culture of the people, things like that, fine. Political figure? Not fine.
