The Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta has donated a well-furnished Police post to the Nigeria Police Force to curtail crimes and criminality at the centre.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, handed over the police post to the Commissioner of Police in the
state, Edward Awolowo Ajogun on Tuesday.

Prof. Olomu said insecurity was a major challenge at the hospital despite the huge investment to rehabilitate the centre to a world class medical facility.

He maintained thatthe police post became necessary at the hospital in view of harassment on members of staff by patient’s relatives and attempt kidnappings within the hospital premises.

The CMD further stressed that the state-of-the-art equipments worth billions of naira procured by the hospital needed to be protected.

“Police is our friend at FMC and that is what we have demonstrated today. Security has been our major challenge here.

"We need to ensure the safety of our patients, staff and property.

“The presence of the police is to reinforce level of security we have within the hospital.

"The police post was necessitated by the wave of harassment of our staff and attempt kidnapping of day old babies.

“We’ve had cases where patient’s cars disappeared and car battery removed. The need to protect the equipment in the centre was very
germane.”

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police represented by Abeokuta Area Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Musliu Aliu, assured the hospital management of sufficient manpower to work at the police post.

The Police Commissioner said the command would continue to give necessary support to the hospital to maintain law and order within the
premises.

In his own remark, the Commander, 35 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Alamala in Abeokuta, Emmanuel Amadasun represented by Captain Gabriel Onyebuchi, urged the police officers attached to the new post to be diligent and put into effective use of the facility.

Speaking earlier, the former Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ade Abolurin lauded the visionary leadership of Prof. Musa-Olomu at the hospital.

Dr. Abolurin noted that the police post would stem insecurity in the hospital and called on the officers attached to the post to justify their
existence by providing useful tips to the management.
