I took my ridgeback-rottweiler female dog for mating in November, and now she is pregnant. I have heard so much about the many things that could go wrong with a pregnant dog including aborting the babies, losing the litter, or even dying during childbirth. I was told to avoid cleaning her with anti-tick products to avoid inadvertent ingestion and to avoid giving her drugs while she is pregnant. She is a very playful and energetic one and I am not sure if to instruct that they put her on leash to prevent her from unnecessary stress.

Please I need the advice of Nairalanders with experience in caring for pregnant dogs. I also like to know if it is imperative to get a vet to take her through this stage, or if it is something my family can handle.

You have nothing to worry about.All I can say is restrict the dog from the stress of running and jumping and also feeding her a quality diet consisting of good protein and carbohydrate is a must,you can also add raw vegetables like your ugwu leaves and carrots to balance it up.Her meals should be broken down in two or three smaller meals a day.and never forget to always provide your bitch with fresh drinking water.Wishing you success.

Thanks a lot Sirs. They just called to inform me that the dog has given birth successfully late this evening. 10 puppies in all. I find this strange though, because she was mated on 1st/2nd of November with a pure breed ridgeback, and I was expecting at least 60 days of gestation. Giving birth today translates to 57 days.

My apprehension for the birth is now over, the next phase is caring for the puppies to make sure I lose no one.

Congrats, it's often a thing of joy when a dog lover or breeder have puppies to care for.

For the next 3 to 4 weeks, they will get all the nutrition and care they need from their mother, she will also clean them by licking their urine and faces...this is perfectly normal. SO LONG AS SHE'S DOING HER JOB WELL, YOU DON'T NEED TO WORRY.

Just make sure they are in a place that is warm and neat.

Hello guys again. Thanks a lot for your advice. We eventually lost one of the 10 pups. The last and the smallest one. We discovered it wasn't able to compete with the remaining ones for Java's breast milk (the mother is Java). I even asked them to buy Nan for all of them as supplement... It eventually died.
