For my family na stocked shop plus 2 million we dey take settle Nwa boy. He can still live with us till he settles down and gets his own accomodation. A family that has trained and set up over 108 Igbo boys since 1970 till date, many from families we don't even know, from as far as Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi.

For onitsha, some heavy men settle their boys with warehouses and 4 storey/decking building.

And those 108 boys will go ahead and settle other boys in the future.

The emboldened isn't necessarily true even though it may appear logical. Under the "nwaboy" system, the boss is under no obligation to "settle" the apprentice; it is simply discretionary.

The understanding is that whilst the boss benefits f6om the boy's stewardship, the boy also benefits from the boss' tutelage while having free food and acomodation. This is why it is mostly the families of a proposed "nwaboy" seeking a good oga for their son to serve under and never the other way round

In some cases, at the end of the stewardship, the boss will say he has no money to give, but may support the boy with contact for suppliers, or simply just pray for him and that's it. Mind you, under this system, there is never any express written agreement. Both parties juat have an understanding and that's it. Which is why you see some boys serving for 8-10yrs even though the initial understanding was around 5yrs.

Igbos apprenticeship system has produced more millionaires than havard business school.

The boy must have really earned that money oo. I remember my sister's landlord that had boys who were serving him. Omo those boys dey work! No pay for seven years before he settles each of them. The only thing he gave was accommodation and feeding twice a day through out the seven years. One particular one after working for five years decided one a very good day to order 3 meat with his breakfast in the shop. Oga sent him packing ooo. Without any compensation because of 150 naira meat.

A maid serves and gets paid. The maid is never trained. That is the one that "earned it".

The boy on the other hand was favoured with the following:

1. Raised with business acumen

2. Trained for a specific trade (which would guarantee his success)

3. Empowered financially to commence his own journey on the same trade (best of all)

If he "earned" at all, that would be based on him passing the tests of trustworthiness, loyalty and accountability before his Boss.

In all, kudos to his Boss and best wishes to the boy.

This is very commendable. Igbos have the best business empowerment structure.

The blessing the man placed on him before handing him the cheque is the main thing. Ask any Igbo trader. If the oga does not bless an apprentice before handing him any money, that money will disappear.

This is a system that is capable of generating employment in the long run where entrepreneurs are adopted in time, schooled purposefully and made to stand on their own while as well making millionaires in the process.

A very nice practice they have. Probably the best apprenticeship system in Nigeria.

BUT it is limited.

In Macroeconomics Value added is what's important.
This system lends itself mainly to TRADE (buying/selling) based skills.

The apprenticeship systems that yields more value is a SKILLED + Trade based system. Kind of the type obtainable in GERMANY. Where a Youth is groomed in a choosen skill for 5+ years and grows to be an expert.

We can start from somewhere though.
And this is good.
