Its very disheartening that you hardly find kids born and raised in the South west speak the Yoruba language, while their counterparts in the diaspora are learning via apps, they are been ignorant. Can a kid born and raised in Berlin not speak German?
The quest to be more Western is eroding the language and culture, the total way of life of the people. Japanese have blended their old traditions with the modern ones, hence they never belittle their own language.
A kid that speaks English all day is not more or less intelligent than a kid that speaks Yoruba/Igbo and English, infact dual language usuage improves the IQ of a growing child.
Our literary giants, Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Adiche , all have a good grasp of their mother tongue. No wonder, they mastered the English language with ease.
So I ask you, Is the Yoruba language a taboo?
Why are you not speaking your language to your kids and make them speak back to you?
