About 20,000 National Guard Members To Deploy For Inauguration, Officials Say

Local and federal security officials expect about 20,000 National Guard members to be involved in securing Washington, D.C., for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration next week.

"I think you can expect to see somewhere upwards of beyond 20,000 members of the National Guard that will be here in the footprint of the District of Columbia," Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said on Wednesday.

It represents an uptick in National Guard troops that will be deployed to the area. Army Times reported earlier this week that the Pentagon had authorized 15,000 National Guard members to be sent to the District for the inauguration.

Contee said the inauguration has been designated as a "national special security event," adding the final numbers of troops would come from the Secret Service and leaving open the possibility the numbers could fluctuate.

The exact number to be deployed is still being worked out by the Secret Service, the lead agency on inauguration security, and others, a U.S. official told NPR's Pentagon reporter Tom Bowman. The official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters, said the number of National Guard members to be deployed is up to 20,000.

The troops will be coming from nearly all states, Bowman reported, adding that only those who are either military police or have law enforcement experience will be armed.

Others will have access to their weapons but not carry them, and it remains unclear where the troops will deploy at the U.S. Capitol, according to the U.S. official.

President Trump issued a statement Wednesday urging supporters to commit "NO violence," citing unspecified reports on future demonstrations.

This is not Uganda, this is not Libya, this is not the Congo, this is not Bosnia or Ukraine, this is the United States Of America.

American seat of government and the cradle of democracy is fully militarized.

This is the sad effects and consequences of homegrown terrorists taking over the government of the most powerful country in the world in less than 30 minutes.

The FBI, Homeland Security, NSA, ATF, the Secret Service, National guards the US Marshals and other powerful law enforcement agencies are all minutes away from the US capitol, but the capitol fell, easily with ZERO meaningful armed response in sight.

Nigerians living in the States should be watchful this weekend and stay home if possible.

If you have Democrats emblem in your car or at the door of your home, please take it down for now until after inauguration.

Don't discuss politics in grocery stores and be careful when you speak publicly and online.

Avoid gatherings this weekend especially senseless Naija parties.
If you can, don't go to church this coming sunday. You won't go to hell for missing just one sunday service.

This is just an advice.

And there was war in heaven, according to the scriptures.

Americans should be very careful.
Those who think they're the better option are even the ones with the heaven's-war instigator – Lucifer.

Your last paragraph though. The US Capitol has its own police. Until they call for help, other security forces can't intrude on their jurisdiction.
If they call for help, those forces will still need authorisation from their superior to act. Since it's DC, the National Guard will need authorization from the President to be deployed.
The Secret Service don't work for the Capitol. They only protect the prominent principal officer holders and the white house.
Not where you have the army doing the work of the police, police doing the work of the FRSC etc.

My assertion wasn't about authorization or seeking authorization before deployment of law enforcements, I was highlighting that even with massive presence of law enforcement agencies around the capitol, the capitol fell, easily, a massive failure and lack of cooperation and coordination.

This kind of law enforcement failure and lack of coordination was addressed and taken care of after 9/11, 911 was the reason why they merged several law enforcement agencies and created homeland security, but 4 years of Trump dismantled everything, he politicized, hollowed out and weakened the agencies and government institutions, he turned them into political agencies serving Trump and the white house alone.

This is the reason why it took forever after so many requests to send the National guards, politics and Trump delayed quick response.

Trump sacked many of the heads of these critical agencies and many resigned for all kinds of reasons, but Trump refused to appoint new heads to direct the agencies with authority that they can not project without confirmation by the congress, Trump intentionally kept them under acting status for his own political benefits and machinations.

The most critical of law enforcement agency in America is the homeland agency, but the head of the same homeland security remained under acting status till he resigned after this insurrection and failed coup.

Seeking authorization or permission was the least of the damage done by Trump.

Read again what I wrote. Youre saying you're not talking about authorization but that's what it is. Despite the hint of a protest that day, the head of the Capitol police department didnt deploy sufficient bodies to the Capitol. He resigned after the incidence. When they breach through the Capitol and calls were made. The Capitol police can't deploy the National Guard even the V.P that was in the building can't do that since it's D.C that authority lies with the President so they calls were made to the Presidential aides to speak to the President which he hesitated to quickly deploy them. Homeland security do not engage in civil unrest. That's the job of the police and FBI. They only deal with domestic terrorist. They protesters weren't terriorist designate.
Like I said, everything follows a chain of command. Once the police can't handle a civil protest, it's only then that the Governor (if not in D.C) can deploy the National Guard and declare a state of emergency or Curfew.

Please, you are not making any sense, sorry to say, we are talking about law enforcement failure across the board and you are talking about authorization and chain of command.

At the end of the day, of what relevance and worth is authorization and chain of command after deaths, damage and destruction?

Law enforcement and critical government agencies from local to federal are supposed to work hand in hand, coordinate and response to imminent threats and unrests, this is what the government put in place after 9/11, but system failed massively.

Regardless of authorization or chain of command, the system was supposed to function smoothly and seamlessly across the board, that's the point, not whatever authorization and chain of command you keep repeating.

Failure is failure, the system failed and the fact that there was a break down between local and federal agencies even based on the same chain of command and authorization you keep repeating means the system failed, that's the point.

The fact that help was requested or not, authorization or chain of command or not, law enforcement cracked and failed, the Capitol fellI so I don't even think you see the flaws in your argument and it seems you just love to hear yourself talk.

Asking for help or not, lack of authorization or chain of command means FAILURE. It's means institutional breakdown.

What part of failure do you not understand?

a system functions the way it was intend to function and you're talking about the system failure.
Where is the failure?
so you wanted Homeland Security, Secret Service, National Guard, NSA, Space Force, Coast Guard, D.C Police, FBI to all rush to the Capitol and create more confusion.
When you're done writing your next epistle, cool down, nobody is fighting with you and try to be open to reason. From the way you're jumping up and down shows you're close-minded and only believe that the system failed.
How can a system fail when it functioned the way it was supposed to function?
the Capitol was breached because of oversight by the Capitol police department. The asked for support when things got out of hand as they are meant to do. The support didn't get in on time because of someone's else oversight. So how did the system fail?
Nobody is attacking you, try to read and understand.

"First, the recent embarrassing events at US Capitol is a proof that certain political events in Africa don't happen because Africans have inferior brain but because most African leaders usually corner their countries' security system and compromise the leaders of judiciary and legislature.

The truth is if Trump had the FBI and military on his side, the story would have been different today.

Second, if #EndSars protesters had invaded the National Assembly and vandalized it, the US officials would have insisted that the protesters must not be pushed back with force but through negotiations. And when force is applied with fatality like it happened in Capitol, sanctions will be threatened and ICJ and Amnesty International would be releasing indicting statements.

The irony in all of these is that racist Trump ended up showing that Caucasians are not superior race but they excelled simply because of some sane patriotic leaders". grin

You mean the system functioned perfectly well as designed because terrorist managed to evade the most powerful, the best trained and well equipped law enforcement agencies in the world to storm and take control of the seat of government in the most powerful country in the world and the same terrorists managed to kill law enforcement officer in the process?

Are you a comedian?

The folks in DC from the law enforcement to military and political leaders agreed that the system failed to prevent what transpired, people resigned because of the failure and you are sitting here rambling that the system did not fail.

I think I've been wasting my time going back and forth with you, please go away and stop quoting me with your insane rubbish.

Dude I won't come down to your level to engage with your level of ignorance. You're the expert there.
The only person that resigned because of the law enforcement not being able to present the protesters from breaching the Capitol was the head of the US Capitol Police.
The rest resigned because they were part of Donald Trump administration and they believe he incited his supporters to attack the Capitol.
People like you probably conjure up Conspiracy theories!
I've tried explaining in the simplest of terms but I you're already closed-minded.
The USCP has jurisdiction of Capitol Hill, no other law enforcement agencies is allowed on the group unless the USCP request for it or in a state of emergency and the National Guard js deployed.
In your own words, how did you expect the USCP to act, taking into consideration that they were not sufficient boots on ground to contain the number of protesters and also unlike Nigeria they are not allowed to shoot live ammunition at civilian populations. Please explain in details how they would have prevented what happened to happen
