It is not uncommon to hear many Igbos from SE say the above about Anioma people.
This is usually said out of annoyance about how ambivalent some Anioma people have become about their Igbo tag since 1970.

There is this feeling among Ndiigbo in SE that many Anioma persons only accept Igbo tag when there is something to gain from claiming such. And are quick to deny Igbo tag when there is nothing to gain.
Many SEners have had ugly experiences where they were publicly disgraced by Anioma persons who they tried to embrace as fellow Igbos in midst of other non Igbos , only for the Anioma person to deny being Igbo. Such Igbo persons usually live with hurt feelings and would usually go about denying any Anioma person who wants to claim Igbo the chance to do so in the future.
The Anioma person exposed to such Igbos, become bitter in their hearts too, and would thereafter go about denying any innocent SEners that try to profile him as an Igbo.

It's a positive feedback thing. Where both sides are pointing accusing fingers at each other.
The Anioma claims that SEners see them as fake Igbo and only call them Igbos when they need their political numbers. On the other hand, the SEners claim that Anioma people are opportunists who only accept Igbo tag when it is helpful.

Let's let the sleeping dog lie... Time will fix all things... When the Oba of Lagos stated that Lagos is not owned by the Yorubas, the Yorubas stylishly pretended like they didn't hear.. Crafty clan! They went behind and started all sorts of outflanking moves to rail in the run-away Oba, who is now dropping verbal bombs like a "loose canon"! Today, they have bridged the gap a bit between their positions and that of Akiolu.. Let's just calm down on the Anioma stuff. Okonjo iweala is Anioma, Jay Jay okocha is Anioma, Pat Utomi is Anioma! Asagba of Asaba nko? Are we going to deny them their heritage? All these denials arer because Igbos are facing persecution on a generational scale in Nigeria at the moment and folks don't want to partake in the purnishment! Once an Igbo is at the top, we all will be good and that is a question of time.. Calm down my people, nothing to hit your head on the wall here...

Anioma One of the people are the Igbo speaking tribes in delta state. It is good the Igbos are already segregating before the Biafra so know no part of Delta, River or Bayelsa will join you and I believe the other southern state we rather form the Niger Delta Country or we go with the West.

I honestly do not think the blame should go to the goofy Anioma goon who suddenly deny his\her Igbo ancestry. The blame should go to the anybody from SE who goes about embracing any fool as Igbo. I cannot even embrace a chap from my hometown if he\she did not publicly acclaimed him\herself Igbo in the public. We have solid relationship with peeps from Anioma who embraced their Igbo ancestry in my neck of the wood. And it is far from Nigerian borders.

We the South East igbos have never denied the Western igbos across the niger even though we were being killed all over Nigeria for the crime of nzeogwu from anioma we took the punishment, we are not like the Yorubas who are always quick to disown their bad children

OP's headline is actually a question which many will not notice. Of course Ndi Anioma are Igbos irrespective of some of the denials. The best approach to this issue to allow the individual in question identify himself. Nigeria at present is still fluidy and we must be very smart how we handle it. Our decentralized political nature coupled with the deliberate schemes of our enemies during the war worsened the situation. OP, if you see into the future, you'll know not to worry yourself about this issue. Nigeria will certainly not last and we will have the last laugh. Those in denial today will swallow their words at that time. All we need to do is keep the flag up high and continue burning the fire. The freezing cold that will come shall push them our way where they'll have a taste of the pie. Do not let this bother you.

Check all their traditional rulers, their regalia and many other things and u will know where they come from. One thing in common with all of them are the Edoish symbols u will observe. Some people will keep on deceiving themselves, they don't know and also don t want to know how vast the Benin Empire was, they like possessing ethnic groups that are Edos.

Edo kee u dia..
You come to someone's else territory to claim he's possessing you? I guess the Edo's that migrated to Libya will help the Oba claim Libya as Edo too...?
