This is because Peter had DENIED Jesus three times in the past (Mt 26:69-75) Although he did not know, he would be damned for ever if he died in that state. That is why Jesus asked him three times also so he will renounce the damned way he had unknowingly chosen with his own tongue by his own word saying "I love you" after carefully thinking through Jesus' question. It must be complete...three denials, three renounces. That is why even though Jesus knew that Peter would be angry/grieved went ahead & asked him the third time (John 21:17). The same with us today. Any time we live against the written word of God, we deny Jesus & until we make a total turn around denying self instead of Jesus Christ, we are walking the way of the damned.

But Jesus very well knew what He was talking about because His sheep meant everything to Him. That's why He would lay down His life for them as a good Shepherd would.

So Jesus already knew that Peter loved Him,
but the question was not if Peter loved Him, but how much Peter loved Him. If Peter loved Him to the extent that he would take His sheep as He took them, and love and care for His sheep the way He did, because He had given His all for His sheep, and was going leave them in Peter's care, so it mattered a whole lot to Him that who He was going to leave His sheep with cared for His sheep as He would.

If Jesus could yet ask Peter who had proven his love for Him beyond any reasonable doubt, if He loved Him three times, I wonder how many times He would ask most of today's church leaders that same question. Because even the love Peter had for Jesus, most of them do not have, so how much more the love Jesus had for His sheep?

Moreover Jesus saying "feed my sheep" to Peter repeatedly on this occasion doesn't mean just giving them food or any kind of food, but the right kind of food, even that which the good Shepherd would feed them with if He were there with them - the kind of food that would lead to eternal life.

May God help us with leaders who would care for the sheep as Jesus did, and do everything they could to ensure that they're not lost to the enemy but preserved til the day the good Shepherd returns for His sheep. Amen!

The words ". .. more than these" have always made me ponder. Jesus had just gotten them 'bread and fish'. Twas like Jesus saying, would you take the feeding of my sheep (seeking God's kingdom & his righteousness) more seriously than your source of livelihood (they were fishermen) & personal satisfaction- (what to eat, drink and wear)?

Back to the question... Jesus knew Peter was human, and the cost of being a disciple comes with a lot of persecution. Even after all the asking Peter still denied Jesus. Because he was afraid it was only human of Peter . But the turnaround came at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came down and saturated and engulfed every heart at the upper room that they began to speak in strange spiritual languages.. the Bible puts it that they were endowed with power, and they began to preach with boldness.
Peter became an extraordinary man who started doing extraordinary things for God, even in the face of great persecution and imprisonment, his faith in Christ never wavered.

3. His disciples desert him because he told them to do so either by words of his mouth or actions. A vivid example was when he was getting arrested and Peter cut down the ear of one of the guys sent to arrest him

But Jesus calm them down and fix back the ear
