(1) the female factor,
(2) the male factor,
(3) combined factors,
(4) unexplained infertility.

In 20% of cases, abnormalities are reported in both partners, and in 15% of cases no diagnosis can be made after complete investigation.
The medical world advices that couples should seek consultation after 12 months of unprotected intercourse if they have not achieved pregnancy. For couples over 35 years of age, it should be after six months.

You may think you know how to make a baby. But do you really understand all the intricate details? Sure, you've got the basics covered -- man meets woman, they have sex, and nine months later, hurray! - but there's a lot more to it than that.
For instance, do you know exactly where sperm and eggs come from, or how these two microscopic miracle-makers ever find each other and combine to create a new life? Or that you have only about a 25 percent chance of getting pregnant during each cycle, even if you time it just right?
Re: Sisters Trying To Get Pregnant by nikinash(f): 10:35am On Feb 20, 2006
For women the possibility of pregnancy begins in the ovaries, those two balls attached to either side of your uterus. The ovaries are like your permanent egg cartons, and they come fully stocked. Every infant girl is born with more than 500,000 eggs (more than a lifetime's supply) in her ovaries. You will never produce any more eggs; in fact, many of them begin dying off almost immediately. But not to worry, you have plenty left for your reproductive years. Altogether you'll probably release about 400 eggs, beginning with your first period and ending when menopause arrives, usually between ages 45 and 55.
Re: Sisters Trying To Get Pregnant by nikinash(f): 10:36am On Feb 20, 2006
Sometime during the middle of your menstrual cycle (most likely between the 11th and 16th days), an egg reaches maturity in one of the two ovaries, which releases it into the abdomen, where it's quickly sucked up by the tulip-shaped opening of the nearest Fallopian tube; these are two 4-inch canals leading from the ovaries to the uterus. This release, known as ovulation, starts the conception clock ticking. The average egg lives only 24 hours, so it has to be fertilized soon if a baby is to be conceived. If your egg meets up with a healthy sperm on its way to the uterus, the two can join and begin the process of creating a new life. If not, it ends its journey at the uterus, where it disintegrates and is expelled a couple of weeks later during your period.
Re: Sisters Trying To Get Pregnant by nikinash(f): 10:36am On Feb 20, 2006
While women are busy maturing a single egg at the leisurely pace of about one a month, men are almost constantly at work producing millions of microscopic sperm, whose sole purpose in life is to swim for their lives and penetrate an egg. While women come complete with all the eggs they'll ever need, men aren't born with ready-made sperm. They have to make them on a regular basis -- from start to finish it takes about 64 to 72 days to create a new sperm cell. Since the average sperm live only a few weeks in a man's body and around 200 to 350 million are set free with each ejaculation, this fertilization factory is working 24/7.

Many reasons abound for the inability of couples to have children. And although primary fertility problems get most of the attention, a lot of people have secondary fertility problems. These are people who already have a child but are unable to get pregnant or carry a pregnancy to term for the second time. The same factors responsible for primary fertility problems are to blame: pelvic scarring, blocked Fallopian tubes, endometriosis, defective ovulation, or poor sperm quality or quantity, to name a few. Whatever the cause, the condition either developed or worsened since the first birth.

Amongst the several factors however, the focus of this book is on polycystic ovarian syndrome. very many people suffer from pcos. it is a disorder found in around one in five women and most don’t even know they have it.
PCOS is the most common hormonal disturbance among premenopausal women. It is the leading cause of infertility due to lack of ovulation. However, it affects far more than just reproduction. Women with PCOS have an increased risk of developing a number of other health conditions.
Re: Sisters Trying To Get Pregnant by nikinash(f): 10:41am On Feb 20, 2006
Symptoms of PCOS could include:
 Irregular or lack of ovulation
 recurrent miscarriages
 numerous small cysts on the ovaries in many, but not all,
cases
 being overweight, rapid weight gain (particularly around
the waist or lower abdomen); difficulty in losing weight
 High blood pressure
 Acne
 Elevated insulin levels, Insulin Resistance, or Diabetes
 Infertility
 Excess hair on the face and body (hirsutism)
 Thinning of the scalp hair (alopecia)
 acanthosis nigrans (darkening of the skin under the arms and

Re: Sisters Trying To Get Pregnant by nikinash(f): 10:42am On Feb 20, 2006
Various treatment options are available. The treatment will be chosen based on the woman's symptoms and fertility status. The options include; weight loss (Improved diet and exercise may decrease insulin levels, which may cause menses to return), use of progestins, anti-androgens, gonadotropin- releasing hormones, fertility drugs, and surgical therapy. A good specialist will be able to determine which is right for you and when.

i have actually written a book on the topic of pcos and i am willing to share information from the book and otherwise with anyone willing to know, so please ask.
Re: Sisters Trying To Get Pregnant by nikinash(f): 10:48am On Feb 20, 2006
i should say that if you have any of the symptoms it doesn't automatically mean you have the disorder, you should still go ahead and get an appoinment with your doctor who would be able to confirm with one or two tests. and also not all women with pcos gain weight.

great effort at educating the females, but you forgot to mention that in over 25% of cases, no matter what test you do everything is normal, and this group have UNEXPLAINED subfertility, in this group only God and advanced assisted reproduction techniques can aid them. Luckily, we can offer almost all types of advanced assistance in Nigeria.

keep the good work up, niki

i'd suggest you ask her to read the book earlier mentioned. you would also do good to read the book too. a condition that could arise from pcos is diabetes. this is one of the reasons why doctors canvass that you get pregnant as soon as ossible if you are diagnosed with pcos, because hormones released will help reverse the effect of the pcos.
