A Nigerian 17-year old boy, Michael Awe, has emerged the second best student in the Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC) for the 2020/2021 academic session.

Michael Awe of St Boniface College in the Kavango East Region of Namibia emerged the country’s second best in the higher level exams behind Sophia Trede of St Paul’s College, a private school in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.

Awe, son of Dr Femi Awe, the Chief Medical Officer of St. Martins Hospital, Oshikuku, in the Northern part of the country, said he prepared for the national exams by consistently studying on his own and following up with his teachers on concepts he didn’t understand.

“I plan on studying electrical and computer engineering at the University of Cape Town,” he said.
he third best is another Nigerian, Mercy Apata of Windhoek High School.

Speaking on her performance, she said “I always put God first, surround myself with people who support and believe in me and I sacrifice what I want to do for what’s necessary. I hope to study medicine one day.”

Others in the top 10 in the higher level exams are Lorene Brand of Windhoek Gymnasium, Fortune Lutombi from St Boniface College, Christo Swanepoel of Windhoek Gymnasium, Tyler Hancox from St Paul’s College, Eino Mpinge of St Boniface College, Tabitha von Ludwiger from Windhoek Gymnasium and Joane van Rooyen from Windhoek High School.

Gideonna Awases of St Boniface College is the country’s top ordinary level performer, followed by his fellow school mate, Jona Ashiyana.

To complete the top 10 are Sihope Luther, France Lugambo, Matheus Kalihonda, Innocentia Nekamba, Kamari George, Anthea Muhapili and Tuwilika Kaukungwa, all of St Boniface College in the Kavango East Region.

The top 10 performers from the higher and lower level exams were honoured at a nationally televised ceremony in the country’s capital, Windhoek.

Namibia still cherishes the old values of hardwork and academic excellence. Every year, they celebrate the top ten in their national junior and senior secondary school certificate exams. They invite the students from all over their country to the capital, Windhoek and celebrate them to encourage their students to pursue academic excellence. The programme attracts top government officials and captains of industry. Corporate bodies partner with schools and donate prizes and money to give to students who excel in their academics. We are only just paying attention now because two Nigerians emerged in the top ten this year.

Nigeria can learn from this African country. We have since derailed, giving undue attention and encouragement to frivolities. It should not always be about entertainment and sports. We need to return to promoting the values that will help us to build the Nigeria of our dreams.
