The Peoples Democratic Party [PDP]  youth leader in Orhionwon Local government area of Edo state David Ogie was gunned down at the early hours of Saturday by some unknown gunmen.

The deputy chairman of PDP in Edo state Chief Dickson Imasogie disclosed to newsmen in the local government headquaters on Saturday during the period of the accreditation for the election.

Dickson said  ‘when  electoral materials were been taken to different parts of the state some party agents were mandated to escort the materials to ensure it was not diverted. But somewhere along the way at night soldiers stopped party agents from moving. The PDP agents decided to spend the night at the house of one Ibu Otomwen, a PDP leader in the area. Fews hours later some unidentified gun men came in and opened fire killing the PDP agent who happened to be our  youth leader in the area’.

He said the body of the deceased was later taken to Orhionwon police station, where an official report wa made. The police sources in the area confirmed the development but added that  only the Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO] could make an official statement on the matter.

Ogun

Contrary to the massive turn-out of voters recorded during the April 2 aborted election into the National Assembly in Ogun State, a low turn-out of voters was recorded across the state yesterday during the rescheduled election.

In many of the polling booths visited in Abeokuta, Odeda, Ijebu-Ode, Odeda, Illaro, Ifo, and other towns in the state, fewer voters were seen on the queues waiting for accreditation and voting  unlike what obtained during the April 2 botched National Assembly polls which was cancelled mid-way into the voting.

In the Abeokuta metropolis, although officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) arrived at polling booths as early as 7.30am this time around, voters only began to trickle in at about 9.00am. For instance, no voter was seen at the Omida polling booth 2 in the Ibara area as at 8.40am even though INEC officials were already there waiting.
Gombe

Some voters in Gombe metropolis have applauded the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s Parliamentary elections, attributing it to the transparency of the electoral body that conducted the election. the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

30-year-old Kabiru Ali, a voter in Dawaki area of Gombe metropolis said what impressed him the most about the whole elections was the peaceful way it was conducted.

“What impressed me about the election was the hitch free way it was conducted. It was free of violence. The conduct was peaceful.”

Another voter, Abdullahi Babangida also shared the same view and commend people for their patience.

53-year-old Dalhatu Babayo, another voter , said he was impressed with the high turn out of voters during the elections.

“We have never had such peaceful election since the second republic. During Shagari”.

Hussaina Adamu, a Housewife and mother of three, said she was also impressed with the peaceful conduct of the election.

Adamu Uda, a voter said he was impressed that5 people came out to vote despite the disappointment of last Saturday.

On his own part, Umar Sha’aibu. Another voter, observed that absence of security personel aided the peaceful conduct of the polls.

“Their presence would have triggered some misunderstanding and this might have caused chaos.”

Explaining why the elections were peaceful, the Executive Director of Council for Democracy and Environmental Action, said it might be because of people’s confidence in the transparency of INEC and the fact that people are now more aware of elections and their rights.

Kano

The legislative elections may not conclusively be used as indicators for the final results of the elections according to the minister National planning, Dr Shamsuddeen Usman as there may be local issues which could alter the results. He was speaking exclusively to Sunday trust yesterday in Kano after being accredited for the elections

He said it is difficult to speculate the outcome as elections may or  may not be indicators as there  are issues that may influence voters to go one way and other issues that may take them to another way. He said the outcome of the election results when out will then make one to predict but stressed that people should patiently wait for the results before any prediction.

The minister called on Nigerians to make sure their votes count as there are stories of people being given paltry sums to vote like N200 and he thinks  this elections are the most important civic duty which people should not sell for a small fee.

More than 900 eligible voters stand to miss the elections as they could not find their names on the voter register in Kabuga area of Kano metropolis.

The voters raised alarm when they discovered that their names were not in the register and the timely intervention of security personnel in the area saved the situation from degenerating into violence.

The electoral officer deployed to the polling station confirmed the development, saying did not know much because he is new in the area.

Also a former vice chairman of Warawa local government area of Kano State Alhaji Ado Mohammed Jemagu has been arrested. He was found to be in possession of a large number of ballot papers.

He was arrested by the police in Warawa with no satisfactory explanation as to how the sensitive election materials got to his possession.

District head of the area Alhaji Abdullahi Sanusi confirmed the incident, saying however election in his domain was peaceful as his subjects remained law abiding throughout the exercise.

The district head thanked INEC officials for bringing election materials in good time to the area and security personnel for the peace that reigned supreme throughout the exercise in the area.

Kaduna

Accreditation of voters began a little bit late in most polling units in Kaduna town as electoral officers arrived between 8.30 am and 10am. Voters patiently waited for the officials while in some polling units, volunteers recorded the names of those present and gave electoral officers when they arrived. This sped up accreditation in such units.

Largely, the turnout was as impressive as last week’s election which was rescheduled for yesterday by the Independent Electoral Commission(INEC) owing to lack of some sensitive voting materials.

Vice President Namadi Sambo and his wife arrived their camp road polling unit at 11.45 am and were immediately accredited. Although security was tight, no one was harassed and the voters neither booed nor heckled the vice president or chanted any campaign slogan around the polling unit. However, after accreditation, his supporters started clapping for Sambo.

He immediately boarded his tinted official car and was driven away by 11.50am. There was a heavy security presence around the polling unit and the exercise, as at 1pm, was largely peaceful. A helicopter was hovering over Out of 1148 registered voters, only 459 were accredited to vote.

At 2.18pm Vice president Sambo returned and cast his vote and finished his civic responsibility in less than five minutes.

At Unguwar Kaji ward of Igabi local government in Kaduna, a mild scuffle nearly ensued as voters waited endlessly for electoral officers at the voting centre in front of Alhaji Sani Zangon Daura’s house. The list of registered voters was missing and accreditation was done on a piece of paper. Voters showed their voters cards and their names were put down.

There are three voting units in the ward and the election officials came at 11.30am at the LEA primary school centre, the voting unit where accreditation commenced the earliest. The officials did not finish accreditation before voting commenced.

At the adjoining voting unit, accreditation commenced at 12.30pm. The officials complained that they were delayed at Rigachikun because election materials were not given to them on time.
