Ebonyi: Gunmen attack police station in Izzi



The police command in Ekiti confirmed the murder of a police officer on Friday when gunmen allegedly abducted a Chinese expatriate in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti state.
Some gunmen attacked the Iboko Division Police Station in the Izzi local government area of ​​Ebonyi State in southeastern Nigeria in the early hours of Monday.

A police station was similarly attacked by gunmen in Akwa Ibom state on Monday.


It is not clear, for now, if the attacks on police facilities, which are increasing lately in the Southeast and South-South regions, are coordinated.

Details of the Ebonyi attack were not available at the time of the report.

The attackers are said to have set the building on fire with incendiary bombs.

Ebonyi State Police Commissioner Aliyu Garba confirmed the incident.

“Yes, they attacked the station around 1 am but there were no casualties.

“They threw an improvised firebomb at the station and it caught, but it only affected a small part of the building.”


Garba said steps were being taken to protect police facilities and personnel in the state.

Part of the steps, he said, include reinforcing units and divisions that need it and rebuilding the confidence of the staff.

Three police officers were killed in a January attack on the Onueke police station in the Ezza South local government area of ​​the state.

The headquarters of the police division in Isu, an Onicha local government area, was similarly attacked in February by gunmen who set the station and four patrol vehicles on fire.

The gunmen took weapons and ammunition at the station.

Three police stations were recently attacked in three other southeastern states of Abia, Imo and Anambra by some unidentified gunmen, resulting in the death of some officers.

In the Abia attacks, which took place in Aba, two officers were killed.

The armed men set fire to part of the station and took weapons and ammunition.

Similarly, two police officers were killed in two separate incidents in Anambra state last Wednesday when some gunmen attacked a police patrol team and a checkpoint in the state.
