They are sitting on the rudder which is like sitting on a car wheel pinion. Imagine the ship to be like a car on Nigerian road with all the potholes. so, every time the rudder (wheel) turns, they turn with it. The whole ship moves to the wave of the sea; called pitching back/forth and rolling sideways. With nothing to hold on to, they will fall into the water and if they survive that, they will not survive the cold as the temperature variation between day and night could be more than 10C.

After getting to the "abroad " then what next? You have no paper to get a job only to become a nuisance delving into crime to survive.

this isn't the best way to die trying. that attempt is already ill-fated, they would never survive on the sea, the wave and storm of the deep ocean is waiting like the leviathan that controls it.
For the 1 or 2 that manage to survive, it will be absolutely worth it. People have survived much harsher conditions at sea

I have friends who do this for a living and have been granted permanent stay in foreign countries. Some die, some make it. Isn't life all about risks? In this case, if they are eventually caught in that ship, they already know two things. 1. They will definitely get paid and its much higher than what most white collar jobs pay in Nigeria now (as high as 200,000 on some ships). 2. They already know where that ship is headed to. Believe me they are prepared for any eventuality..

They will alert the crew on board of their presence when they believe its time to. The crew in turn takes them to the authorities in charge after feeding them o. And they get paid to go back, with naval escort or flight. That, or they are relocated individually to various states within the country and given accommodation, jobs and a better life. Pays better than dying for nothing in Nigeria. Lol

At Apapa, the ships crew usually shout before they leave. "come out black man, come out Nigerian man"

The issue of stowaway is a very serious one in Lagos. Most of this guys are port- rats. They came from places like Edo and work and live around the sea port, looking for half an opportunity to elope to the West, even if it may cost them their lives.

They are lucky that the high seas Code has been refined of recent.
In the past, when stowaways are found, the ship captains usually throw them overboard, since no body will be looking for them.

It's a stupid fate to resign one's self to.

I believe these pictures were taken by someone in a boat who saw them as they sailed by. Truth is they can't last a day.

grin tell me you're joking.

If you truly believe this, please my brother. Change your thought process today, Because I don't want to read someday that you died while stowing away.

When people stow away, it's usually in places like the Ship's engine room or in the cargo hold

In the position where they're sitting, they stand no chance. They can easily fall off the rudder and be drawn into the massive propellers.

Let's even say they survive, The ship's crew usually search the ship before they leave port, then they'll stop some miles away from the harbour (Trying to fool any stowaways into thinking they've arrived their destination) Here they do a second search. They third search is done just before they get to their next port.

The reason being that stowaways are usually a costly and persistent problem for sea faring vessels. The penalties are usually very steep if a vessel records discovering a stowaway.

Most Captains like to kill stowaways, so your chances of being found and clothed, then given a job, some pocket money and all that nonsense you wrote up there is less than 0

Unless the ship is sailing from Apapa to Tin Can, these guys chance of survival is 0.000000001%
Some have survived from Lagos port to Calabar port and they were caught at a private jetty in Calabar. They stocked food in that rudder. Those guys are something else.

This isn't courage but the height of frustration, misery and hopelessness.

Nigeria has failed her people, we are not even a war zone, why should citizens take the highway to escape?

This photo says a lot about the Nigerian government. No hope!
