Nigeria is already in a dollar crisis, despite the diaspora dollar remittance.

Poor governance and large dollar loans by the present government has place Nigeria in a precarious position of needing dollars to pay for oil subsidies and the growing debt liability.

Under Iweala stewardship, majority of the debt were in Naira. Due to the ongoing Naira devaluation in Buhari government the Naira debt is too expensive, hence this government has no choice but to take dollar debt , but Nigeria barely earned $20 billion last year.

How is Buhari government a corollary of Iweala stewardship? Was Iweala ever the president of Nigeria?

The reality is Obasanjo as president paid off a substantial foreign debt burden?
This debt started to rise again under Goodluck Jonathan. As it were Iweala was the same Finance minister under Jonathan who was borrowing to pay salaries in 2015
Iweala was appointed as Minister by Jonathan in 2011. Her first budget was tinged with subsidy scandal after the infamous New Year gift of increased petrol price in January 2012

how can Nigeria move forward? common 18 hours a day light is impossible and someone want to buy tesla car and try am for Naija road. . The private sector is trying but the useless government does not know how to operate a country like a business. All they do is to collect money and spend.

Let them continue to deceive themselves. Na their families go suffer.

If Nigerians abroad truelly send 29 billion dollars, we wont be in any dollars crises even if the price of oil falls.

In 2019, Nigeria oil revenue was $64.9 billion, so this people abroad are telling us that they send almost half of the country's oil revenue. What a joke.

Infact oil and agriculture are the bulk of Nigeria's revenue, not diaspora remittance.

When a foolish man is talking. Hmmmmn.

I still don't understand what kind of threat this is.

Are they sending the dollars to Nigerian account or to their families?

Just like a man threatening to stop taking care of his family for whatever reason.

They can withhold their remmittance, maybe so buhari will die of hunger.

Whatever benefit Nigeria stand to gain from the remmittance can go to blazes.

Nonsense and ingredients.

Your thought process seems shallow.

The money helps provide availability of USD to nigeria, which is why dollar is not up to 2knaira/$ at the moment or worse.

If the naira slides against the dollar, do you think your 30k income will still have value in the market?

Do you know the commission banks make from these transactions? and how it benefits their work force, and to a larger scale, unemployment?

Without these remittances, people will not be able to buy their necessities. Low trading activities means doom for the economy.

Do you know how many businesses have been set up by nigerians in diaspora? and how they keep people like you employed?

Please, do not embarrass your teachers.

Withhold What? It Just doesn't make sense. In fact, they are now putting themselves and their families in jeopardy.
They should have just gone to court. If they are repatriating $23B annually, Tivland should have been small Lagos now.
It is so childish and ineffectual.

I can see the kind of bitterness and hatred you have for Lagos. The guy stepped on your wound, you exploded. The problems you mentioned above are associated with overpopulation. Lagos is a dumbing ground in Nigeria.

You should have told the guy $23 billion remittance is not from Tiv in diaspora but the entire Nigerians in diaspora. That was the mistake the guy made but instead of you correcting him, immediately you saw Lagos, you exploded.

Instead of debating about the amount remitted home by Nigerians in diaspora, we should be discussing about Fulani Invasion of Tiv land and Benue in general. The request to the National Assembly is the alleged take-over of your ancestral lands, forcing your kith and kin to flee for safety. This is what pushed your people to the Lagos you hate so much. If true federalism is practised in Nigeria most people will not be in Lagos

You see, you're a typical arrogant, ignorant Nigerian.
Las las, we go find out say you no get shishi. Let me educate you.

According to the UN migration data portal, there were 1.3 million emigrants from Nigeria in 2017, which represented 0.6% of the total population.
This category also accounts for the remittance flows to Nigeria.

Unofficial reports state that there are about 18 million Nigerians in the diaspora. The Diaspora remittance in 2017 was US$22.00 billion.
In 2018, Nigerians in diaspora remitted US$23.63 billion representing 6.1% of Nigeria's GDP. Nigeria’s crude oil and natural gas receipt in 2016 is $23 billion. This earning is about at par with the diaspora remittance of 2018.

We must bear in mind that the captured remittance figures do not take into consideration, informal and material remittances which represent about 50% of the officially recorded figures. The Nigerian Central bank is also a certified den of thieves notoriously known for the downward departure of figures so it will be fair to aver that the actual remittance figures are probably much higher.

The 2018 figure translates to 83% of the Federal Government budget in 2018 and 11 times the FDI flows in the same period. Nigeria's remittance inflows was also 7 times larger than the net official development assistance (foreign aid) received in 2017 (US$3.4 billion.)

Only India, China, Mexico, the Philippines, and Egypt received larger remittance globally, collectively accounting for approximately 36% of total global inflows

So, quit displaying your ignorance in the public space. Without this diaspora remittance, Nigeria's unemployment rate, Poverty index, crime rate, etc will be double what it is presently.

If Lagos were a country, it would be in the OECD. All her development data are way out of the league of your state sir.

That figure of $25 billion is most likely to be true, the data is from reasonable source,

Say: 10, 000, 000 able Nigerians in the diaspora.
say: $100 per month
We have 1000 000 000 ($1 billion) per month
12 months, we have 12 * $1 billion = $12 Billion

That's just base on $100 per month.

Majority of the foreign remittance goes to fund projects in Nigeria like buildings, farming, etc....these projects in turn provide steady employment for millions of Nigerians and putting food on their tables.

So they don’t need to stop remittance to their families, just pulse those projects and Nigeria economy will feel the impact.

And don’t under estimate the importance of these remittance to the Nigeria economy. Even CBN recognizes these importance hence they launched their Naira-for-Dollar program to attract more foreign remittance by giving N5 for every $1 remitted.

This is what has been sustaining many of us in Nigeria, since the How To Join Telegram Channel politicians have decided to withhold our commonwealth, spending it outside the country.

To those saying why the threat, aren’t they sending the money to their family?
If the money is sent to their families, are their families keeping the money?

What you don’t know is that the money sent to their families and assets acquisition in Nigeria have surely increased the percentage of cash flows in Nigeria

Just Google Goodluck Jonathan Chinese loan

Stop talking ignorantly
What is Nigeria's external debt history for the last 20 years .

Do not just come here to make baseless assertions
Did Nigeria borrow from China or the World Bank when she was in office Yes or No?

The point is why are we comparing Iweala with Buhari? Was she President?

Debt is Debt .
Ngozi Okonjo Iweala was part of a government that prioritized the payment of Paris Club debt over local creditors. Was that fair to us?

Bear in mind that state governments also borrowed abroad especially Lagos and that debt was guaranteed by the Federal Government.
It is annoying when people come here to spout falsehood with much authority

Quite apart from cash remittances is the material imports like Cars ,truck and machines that run into millions if not billions of dollars in value.
The reality is with the herdsmen crises many people are rethinking whether retiring to Nigeria is a realistic long term goal and will adjust their investment behaviour accordingly. I suspect people will only remit to family whilst reducing investment activity.
How many people have we heard who invested in farms and got killed by herdsmen?
