Shun social vices, FUNAAB VC urges 4,087 new students

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Felix Salako, has urged new students of the school to shun all forms of social vices.

He gave the advise on Wednesday during the 2019/2020 Matriculation Oath taking ceremony where 4,087 students were admitted for full programmes of the institution.

Salako disclosed that matriculating students will be responsible for their actions even when they pleaded ignorance.

While addressing journalists, the Vice Chancellor urged the students to be committed, focused and disciplined so as to graduate in flying colours.

"We are resolute in flying our core values of academic excellence tied with integrity, accountability, high moral standards as well as ethical behaviour and fairness in all relationship with students and staff.

"Our goal is to be a world-class University, building men and women who would be great achievers in their chosen fields of interest and academic pursuits.

"To achieve this goal, our fresh students must strive at all times not to compromise excellence and they must also avail themselves of the various programmes/events/activities provided by the University from time to time.

"You are encouraged to make use of our Guidance and Counselling Unit as well as relate well with your Departmental Supervisor."

He explained that a total number of 10,328 applicants shown interest in the university for the 2019/2020 admission exercise, while a total number of 9,865 attended the Post-UTME screening exercise.

He stressed further that about 4,230 applicants were offered provisional admission in strict compliance with the University quota as approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The Vice Chancellor, however, noted that only 4,087 applicants were finally registered as new students of the institution.

He also boasted that FUNAAB remains a reference point in entrepreneurial, scientific and agricultural education, adding that her graduates were proven job creators and role models as dependable employees.

He maintained that the university is committed to its vision and mission of producing graduates adequately equipped to handle contemporary
challenges through cutting edge research in Agriculture and science driven by Information and Communication Technology, ICT.

Meanwhile the commencement lecturer, Prof. Stephen Afolami, said there are many banana peels that can derail their studies.

He stressed that they must watch out for them and strenuously plan their time such that they will be able to weather the storm.
