Ol boy, this is by no means near a good news.

Serious countries left extractive industry centuries ago. Migrated to industrial production, then hitech production. But here we are still talking about selling raw cocoa for almost free.

You export a raw bag of cocoa at N20,000. White man refines it at the cost of N10,000. Sells the byproducts (cocoa drink, chocolate etc) at N200,000.

White man makes N170,000 profit from your N20,000 years of sweat.

Extractive production impoverishs a nation.

As a matter of urgency, we must learn to add value to our raw materials, be it gold, diamond, crude oil or cash crops like cocoa and cotton.

See, Nigerians are short sighted. They like quick money and the government also is not helping.

When the industries are not on ground yet, we have to first exploit the market for our current production.

With time, we can set up processing industries.

Although there's the problem of short-sighted government policies, lack of infrastructure, lack of honest human capital, and lack of standards. With Nafdac collecting kickbacks and bribes, it's almost impossible to enforce international food standards.

I hardly see any strong Economy lining up to offtake coca products produced in Nigeria with out current realities.

The business aspect may be far more challenging than you can see on the surface.

The President of Ghana recently gave the Swiss a lecture on that.

Nigeria has been PROCESSING cocoa beans (into semi-finished ‘cake’ and finished products) since the Babangida regime...
Nonetheless, they are still always going to be foreign importers only interested in buying raw cocoa beans for any number of reasons.

When you export raw materials, you export employment but when you import finished goods, you import unemployment. I know there's more to it but to a large extent, it is what it is

If this raw material can be processed in Nigeria, it would create thousands of jobs and put money in people's pockets.

Why can't we set up factories to refine such products and the excess we export including our own refined products. But no way, FGN policies and tax go cripple the whole factories

At the macro level its not great but lets learn to walk before we try to run. The urgent need in the economy is diversification. From there we can jump to refinement.

Nigerians should endeavor to learn more about their own country (or perhaps it’s just Nairalanders grin)...
As I noted in the comment above, cocoa PROCESSING in Nigeria is a relatively “mature” industry pre-dating most of us.

At the very least, relatively large-scale cocoa PROCESSING in Nigeria goes back over 30 years to the Babangida era...
Nigerian PROCESSORS (such as FTN, Stanmark, Muliti-Trex, etc.) produce chocolate, cocoa butter, cocoa cake, and cocoa powder.

PS: Nonetheless, there’s still going to be foreign importers only interested in raw cocoa beans for a variety of reasons.

How bad yorubas play politics. The want only Lagos port to be active and give flimsy excuses why other ports shouldn't be used. A country like Nigeria should never have or rely on only one sea port.

how many Nigerians eat chocolate compared to the western countries?....it's better being exported as people of western countries prefer their own brand of chocolate.. especially Swiss,Belgian or Italian chocolate
How do you know that they prefer their own chocolate? Do they options? Are there Nigerian Chocolate in their country?

Very simple, if we start producing good quality chocolate, they will also buy our products. It is as simple as that.

I think the identity of this exported should be hidden from the public for now, at least until this Fulani government leaves. Because as it stands, the location of his farm may be locked on and MACBAN will send herders to his farm to do the usual.

Or alternatively, the military arm of MACBAN (Bandits aka Boko Haram) may decide to kidnap him for ransom (if they won't even murder him) while the political arm of MACBAN (Buhari government) directs its security forces to look away.
