Ere Ibeji by Tyewolove(f): 2:41pm On Mar 26, 2021
Ere Ibeji literally means Ere-scared image, Ibi-born, Eji-two. In Yorúbá culture and spirituality, twins are believed to be magical, and are granted protection by the Orisha Shango. If one twin should die,it represents bad fortune for the parents and the society to which they belong.

The parent will seek consultantion with an Ifá diviner a Babalawo. If the Babalawo ascertains a spiritual cause,he will help the parent find a carver to create an Ere Ibeji figure to represent the deceased twin.

And the parent take care of the Ere Ibeji figure as if,it were a real person. The Ere Ibeji is ritually washed, fed, clothed and carried in a cloth wrapper. Clothing made from cowrie shells,as well as beads, coins and paint.
Ere Ibeji figures are carved to represent an ideal type within the Yorùbá criteria of beauty and in the prime of life- neither a child not an old person.

The first born of the twin is known as Taiwo (tà-yé-wo)"go and have a taste of life" while the second one is called Kehinde (kéhin-dé).
In Yorúbá culture the second twin is considered the elder twin, the reason for this is that Taiwo is sent by Kehinde to judge if the world is fit and beautiful before he/she descends in accordance with Yorùbá beliefs.

Kehinde is supposed to be matured, intelligent, more wiser and displinced while Taiwo is believed to be vibrant, kind, sociable and indifferent.
The Orisha ibeji and, by association, the twins were attributed powers of fertility, prosperity, avenger, detector of thieves and rainmaker.
Power of fertility; although the cult of the twins is a kinship one, nevertheless, because of the power associated with it, because of the power associated with it.

Supplication could be made to the Orisha ibeji by a childless woman to be blessed with an offspring.
Èjiré ara isokun
Jé kí nrí je ki nri mu
Èjiré Ókínwa té wo mí bo Osun Omo
Beautiful looking twins,natives of isokun
Let me find to eat
Let me find to drink
Majestic and beautiful looking twins
Give me the blessing of a child.

Power as healer; the power of healing is manifested when the"ibeji" emblem is washed in water and with certain plants which grow in water. A mixture of shea butter, water leaves, palm oil and juice of snails are made. The juice of the leaves is squeezed into the mixture and the leaves are used as sponges in washing the emblem. This water in which the ibeji has been washed would be poured in the bath and anyone who bathes there would be cured of their illness

The relative of monkey
Jumping helter skelter
Landed in a wretched man's house
Turning around his misfortune into blessing
A rare set of children that commands undue honor and respect from their parents
To your stepmother, you are an unwelcome sight
But to your mother, you are both emperor's of two empires.
