Saturday, 16 April 2011 00:00 From Njadvara Musa, Maiduguri News - National

FORMER Minister of Petroleum and Steel and elder statesman, Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno, on Thursday condemned the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership for urging the Igbo to vote en mass for President Goodluck Jonathan in today’s election, warning that such calls could jeopardise the peace and unity of the country.

Monguno, who spoke to The Guardian at his Maiduguri residence, said that it was rather preposterous for a revered socio-cultural group to declare in a public medium that it has thrown its full weight behind the candidature of a sitting President.

The call according to the elder statesman was however, not only ill-timed, but also capable of tearing a heterogeneous country like Nigeria apart and against the tenets of democracy and popular choice of the electorate.

“When I heard that call made by the Igbo elders on television, which more or less directed or requested the Ndigbo to vote for the President, instantly I felt it is ill-timed, in the sense that it was coming about 73 hours to the presidential election.

“Asking its people to vote for one particular candidate in a country that has been lauded as one indivisible nation with so many tribal and religious groups should not have come up.

“It is ill-timed and uncalled for; in the sense that it smacks of division; it smacks of anti-peace, anti-progress and anti-security,” said Monguno.

He said he was very much glad that other major ethnic groups in the country did not beat similar drum of support in favour of any candidate, adding that in a country that believes in unity, peace and progress, such tendencies could threaten the values of democracy.

He further disclosed that it will not be out of place if the authorities could call on those concerned to question, asking them to exercise some restraints, because it is ill-timed and damaging to our unity, especially at this critical time.

Very interesting call by Munguno.
Where was he when Ciroma was pounding his fist on the table, conspiring against GEJ on behalf of northern interest. Where was he? These senile old men who rode to glory in Nigerian politics on the back Igbos are surely unable to read the changes and the handwrittings on the wall.

when ciroma said he will march 1 million northerners to abuja,.,.,, ,.,. well was he able to even organise 10000 apart from his thugs

Every man should mind his own skin. Go out and vote how you want today. ACF told every northerner to vote for a northerner. ACF told every political party to yield a northern candidate for presidency. Where was Ali Monguno when this was happening? ACF isn't a poltical group at all,at least so-they-say. Anyway, 1 man 1 vote. Yp up Goodluck! cool

Why didn't this stupid old man warn Ciroma and his "northern generals" when he was threatening the president? You better be objective and answer the simple question. Why didn't Munguno warm Ciroma

to be honest he did not talk about ciroma because he knew no one will listen to him, as i said earlier where is ciroma today in the north.

but as you can see, ohaneze is ative and telling igbos everywhere to vote for jonathan

there effect is even evident here on NL, isn't it undecided

Now he realises the Igbos will listen to him? Just listen to your own lame excuses. The NPLF has been harrasing GEJ for more than 6 months now, and this SOB kept mute, now he wakes from his senile slumber and wants to tell Igbos how to behave
Is it ok to have northern interest without having Igbo, Ijaw, Yoruba interest?
This is precisly the reason why silly people like you think it's ok for the northern governors to meet and defend northern interest, and then turn around to prohibit southern governors from meeting?

You could be one of his numerous bi*tches, i don't care. That you're one of his almajiris is your own business, but that old bast-ard has no right to pass biased judgment against Ndigbo.

Tis a free country. They should be able to endorse whoever they want. It isn't as if their endorsement is binding on all Igbos, or something.

I guess Ohaneze is learning fast. Seems they have learnt that sectional politics has been the bargaining power of other ethnic groups since the creation of nigeria.

BTW, who gives a damn about the opinion of the corrupt former petroleum minister? There has never been such thing as peace and unity in Nigeria.

The man is right . . . . these Ibo leader's continue to shoot the chances of the Ibo nation by their utterances in this election, and the next by their utterances.

The Ali Mangoro is a fo.ol for saying that. Right now i'm in sokoto and the voters openly shout Allahu akbar before stamping their thumbs on CPC, what do you call tha1? Infact i will go as far as calling any South Eastern or South Southern voter who doesn't vote for Jonathan A FCKING BIG FOOL !

One thing is obvious: ndiigbo are learning fast and others are getting jittery.

Next time igbos are united like this under any candidate, the result is still going to be d same - resounding victory!

There are at least 3 Northern candidates on the ballot today, so again, people shouting Allah Akbar before voting does not mean much to this discussion and this election. They could also be saying the same and voting ANPP, Or even ACN. People have a right to vote who they want.

I am not here to discuss his personality but his statement which I believe is on the mark. No ethnic groups should require their people vote one way or the other as it will definitely come back to hunt'em. We know this  . . . so why make the same mistakes over and over?? So, again, the man is right.

Whether he's right or not is not the question, he's darn biggest hypocrite for coming out to make that statement when we all know well what's happening around the country.
PEOPLE HERE WERE TOLD IN MOSQUES NOT TO VOTE FOR INFIDELS, SIMPLE. OHANEZE ARE SAYING DON'T VOTE FOR A SEMI-LITERATE ABOKI, SIMPLE.

Again, here is the mistake you are making, that somehow Ibo leaders are the only one's preaching bigotry. We know that is not the case, however, that should not be an excuse for Ibo leaders, any of them, to engage in such. I am not going to pretend that because bigotry exists in the north, it then makes sense for Ibos to engage in the same. So again, the man's message is on point.

I accuse nairalanders who are salivating because of a misguided interview allegedly accredited to Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno of hypocrisy. Many Igbo sons and daughters have long criticized the political posturing of Ohanaeze in endorsing GEJ yet there was no commendation to those Igbo extractions from this bunch of haters.

I should remind Ali Monguno that the unity of Nigeria existed only in the figment of his imagination. Again, Ndigbo do not cow-tow politically or otherwise.

In this particular election, if Igbos do not vote for Jonathan, who else will they vote for?

Mungono now knows how important the Igbo is? I thought the North has all the power?
Re: Ali Monguno Condemns Ohanaeze’s Call On Igbo To Vote For Jonathan by Obiagu1(m): 3:31pm On Apr 16, 2011
Let the bigotry begin. I support Ohaneze. Why should people complain now that the Igbos are about practicing what they've practiced for years?

This is the bigotry I need now in Nigeria as it shortens the live span of Nigeria.
Let every fool go and fool themselves in their own homes!
Re: Ali Monguno Condemns Ohanaeze’s Call On Igbo To Vote For Jonathan by Kobojunkie: 3:36pm On Apr 16, 2011
Well, to win a Presidential election, candidates will need to get votes from most every region in order to be considered. If Ibo leaders demand all ibo's vote Jonathan, and other regions demand that their regions not vote him, Jonathan will not win, no matter how many millions more Ibo votes he gets in Ibo land. It is as simple as that. So playing regional politics when the presidency is concerned is digging the regions own grave for future elections.

The man is simply stating what everyone ought to know in this. You cannot win when you play regional politics, especially if we intend to continue along this free and fair (maybe more for future than now) path.
