JESUS, OUR SHIELD. JOHN 10:11
"I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd risks and lays down His [own] life for the sheep". Amplified Bible

I greet you in the name of the Lord my dear friends. It is another wonderful time to share the word of God, especially as today is Easter Sunday when we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. I pray that we shall truly know him and experience the power of his resurrection. Today, we will look at the topic “Jesus, our shield”. We will divide this teaching into three parts; “Jesus”, “Our” and “Shield”.

Let us start with Jesus. Who is Jesus? I know this is a strange question to ask because who does not know Jesus? Or who has not heard about him before? But it is a valid question because we have heard a lot of things about who he is. Some people say we cannot call him the son of God because God does not have a wife, neither does he have a child. Therefore, let me reintroduce Jesus to you. Jesus is God himself. Philippians 2:6 "Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to". (NLT). Then, why do we call him the son of God? Firstly, we need to understand that the first and only time God fathered a child was when Jesus was born. This is why he is called the son of God. I hope I have not confused you, let us take it like this, God created the heaven and the earth. He blessed us to be fruitful and multiply. However, he does not father children, we humans do that through his blessing but when he needed to reconcile us back to him and a member of the trinity was to come to die for our sins. God for the first time fathered a child when the Holy Spirit breathed on Mary. That action made the child born by Mary to be of holy birth and to be of God.

If that is understood, let us talk about the fact that Jesus is the savior. Savior means deliverer. John 1:29 "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (NLT). In the bible text above, John the Baptist upon meeting the Lord announced the purpose of Jesus on earth by calling him the one who will take away the sins of the world. This declaration confirmed the fact that Jesus is the savior who will die to for the sins of the world. More so, it is noteworthy that Jesus being the messiah is the same thing as being the saviour (deliverer).

If this is so, who are those that Jesus has come to deliver? Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free". (NLT). Jesus has come to deliver those in the captivity of sin. Because he is the savior that came primarily to the world to deliver us from sin. This means that he is the only way to eternity. John 14:6 "Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me”. Contrary to some beliefs that Jesus is one of the ways to heaven, Jesus is the only way that leads to the kingdom of heaven. Because he is the only one who died for ours sins as the lamb of God. In addition, Jesus came to deliver those in the captivity of sicknesses, diseases and other satanic bondages.

Moving forward dear friends, we have seen who Jesus is in our topic. It is time to explore our. From your knowledge of English language, you know that our is a pronoun that stands for a group of people but in this context, our has a personal interpretation for each person who has encountered Christ and is part of the fold of Christ. John 10:27 "My sheep listen to my voice, I know them, and they follow me" (NLT). It starts with a personal encounter and becomes a collective affair in the sense that Jesus being a shield is not just for you but to everyone who believes in his name.

Furthermore, let us examine the last aspect which is Shield. Shield stands for defence. By saying Jesus is our shield, what we are trying to say is found in John 10:28 "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me". From this, we can see that Jesus is a defence system for those who have already given their lives to him, so that they do not go back to their sinful habits. Also, John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep". (NLT). Jesus saying that he will lay down his life for his sheep reaffirms the point made earlier that he is the savior. The greatest reason why he came is to deliver us from sin. 1 John 3:8b "But the son of God came to destroy the works of the devil". Therefore, if you have not given your life to Christ, it is when you have given your life to Christ that he can become your shield by making you abide in him through the Holy Spirit John 14:16. In the same vein, Jesus as our shield tells us that he will give his all to ensure our safety. Safety in keeping our salvation and our physical safety in protecting us from the dangers flying everywhere but for emphasis, the greatest shield our Lord offers is the shield from the powers of sin that he came to destroy.

Now, if you are ready to surrender your life to him, say this prayer after me; "Lord Jesus, I come to you humbly and I confess that I am a sinner, save me and be my Lord. Wash away my sins and take me into your fold". Amen. If you recited the prayer, I rejoice with you and I welcome you into the fold. Do well to join a bible believing church as you begin your new life in Christ. May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you dear friends.
