Ramadan Day 1.

TAFSEER OF SURATUL FAATIHAH FROM IMAM AS-SA'DI

Tafseer of "الحمد لله رب العالمين"

(الحمد لله):
This is praising Allaah with His perfect attributes and actions that revolve around favour and justice.

Therefore, complete praises is due to Him in all dimensions.

(رب العالمين):
The Lord is the One who nurtures all the universe [everything besides Allaah (is from the universe)] by way of creating them, preparing tools for them (to use when in this life) and bestowing great blessings upon them of which without them (i.e. blessings) they cannot remain (alive). Therefore, whatever blessing they have is from Him, the Most High.

The nurturing of Allaah, the Most High, of His creation is of two types: general and specific.

As for general: this is by way of creating the creations, providing for them, guiding them to what will benefit them (e.g. discovering what leaves or plants bring about beneficial food) which will cause them to remain in this life.

As for the specific: it is by way of nurturing His friends. He nurtures them with eeman (i.e. causing them to be strong in faith), success towards it (eeman) and he completes it for them. He takes away obstacles and barriers that want to stay between Him and them (i.e. His friends). In essence, it is a divine nurturing that leads to all good and saves from all evil. Perhaps, this is the secret in the Supplications of the Prophets where the statement "LORD" is mostly found (in their supplications). Without doubt, all their requests fall under this specific nurturing.

Therefore, His statement (rabbil Aalamin) points to His Oneness in creation, management (of the universe), blessings, complete self-sufficiency and complete dependency of the universe on Him, in all aspects and manners.

Tafseer of "الرحمن الرحيم"

These are two names that point to the fact that Allaah, the Most High, has a great encompassing mercy that encompasses every living and non-living thing. He has written this mercy (specifically) for the pious ones that follow His Prophets and Messengers. Therefore, they have unrestricted mercy. As for other than them (that do not follow the Prophets and Messengers), they also have a share in it (reason you'll see a disbeliever being rich despite being a disbeliever.)

You should also know the salafs (pious predecessors – Sahabas and the two generations after them) of this ummah and it's scholars have agreed upon the fact that one must have eeman with the names and attributes of Allaah and (he should also have eeman with) the rulings attached to these attributes.

For example, Muslims are to have eeman that Allaah is Ar-Rahmaan [The Most-Merciful (to His creation)] and Ar-Raheem[The Ever-Merciful (to His believing servants)]. He attributed to himself that he is the One with encompassing mercy that gets to the one that mercy was conferred on.
Therefore, all blessings is an effect from the effects of His mercy. This also applies to the rest of His names (i.e. they have meanings which we should know and believe in without distorting, exemplifying, questioning or negating).

You say in His name, "Al-'Aleem;" He is the The All-Knowing that has knowledge with which He knows everything and you say in His name, "Al-Qadeer;" He is The All-Capable that has capability over everything.

TAFSEER OF SURATUL FAATIHAH FROM IMAM AS-SA'DI

Tafseer of "مالك يوم الدين"

(Al-Maalik) is the One who has the attribute of Possession which brings about the fact that He commands, prohibits, rewards, punishes and acts as He wants with His creations in all manners He deems fit. He then (specifically mentioned and) added The Day of Resurrection to His dominion, which is the Day of Judgment, the day where people will be judged according to their deeds, good or bad. This is because on that day, it will become clearly apparent to the creations that His dominion, justice and wisdom are all perfect. Also, no king will be recognised from the creations so much so that the king, subjects, slaves and nobles will all be on the same level. They will all be humble and abased to His greatness and might. They will all wait for His recompense hoping for His reward and will be scared of His punishment.

For this reason, Allaah specifically mentioned it; although, He is the Possessor of the Day of Judgment and other days.

Tafseer of "إياك نعبد وإياك نستعين"

That is, it is to you alone we restrict our worship and aid-seeking. This is because when the object (of a sentence) is brought forward (in Arabic language), it means restriction. This restriction means, affirming what has been mentioned (worship and aid-seeking) for Allaah alone and negating it for other than Him. It is as if we are saying, "we worship you alone and we don't worship other than you. We seek aid with you and we don't seek aid with other than you."

Allaah mentioned worship first before mentioning aid-seeking. This comes under mentioning a general statement first before mentioning a specific one (from that general statement)[i.e. the specific one mentioned after the general one shows the emphasis laid on the specific one since aid-seeking is also worship]. Also, Allaah mentioned worship first before aid-seeking to show that His rights come first before the rights of His slaves (i.e. worship is Allaah's right and it comes first before any other thing).

"Worship" is an encompassing noun that includes everything Allaah loves and is pleased with from actions and statements, open and hidden.
"Aid-seeking" is reliance upon Allaah, the Most High, in bringing good (to you) and warding off evil (from you) while trusting Him that it will come to be.

Establishing the worship of Allaah and seeking aid with Him is the way to everlasting happiness and safety from all evils. There is no way to happiness except by establishing these two.

Worship can't be called worship except when taken from the Messenger of Allaah while seeking the face of Allaah alone. With these two things, worship will be actualised.

Mentioning aid-seeking after worship despite that aid-seeking is part of worship is due to the fact that every slave (of Allaah) needs Allaah's aid to be able to carry out every act of worship. If Allaah does not aid him (in any worship), he will be unable to do what he intends in following the commandments of Allaah and staying away from His prohibitions.

Tafseer of "اهدنا الصراط المستقيم"

That is: point, guide and grant us success to the straight path. This is the clear path that takes you to Allaah and His Paradise. This is knowing the truth and working with it. Therefore, guide us to this path and guide us on the path.

Guidance to the path is holding on to the religion of Islam and leaving any other religion (holistically), while guidance on the path constitutes guidance to knowing all the details of the religion and working with them.

This supplication is one the most all-inclusive and beneficial supplication for the slave. For this reason, it is compulsory for an individual to supplicate to Allaah with it in every raka'ah of his salaah, because he needs it.
